    Toa Hunter-Gatherer

Recorded this earlier to watch with interest tonight. I'd heard some controversy about the shooting of the deer.
Have to say I found the presenter has real camera presence and I really enjoyed a bit of culture and even seeing a hunting technique we dont see down here in the south as much, not my choice of technique but no punches pulled. Im always a proponent of us portaying the cleanest aspects of hunting we can to the public and maybe in future the mercy shot or rapid dispatch of animals can be made more evident but this show was real and I get that.
    Pretty impressive prospects I think.

Not very impressed to be honest, watched his YouTube stuff and happy. Thought that first deer shot was a little far back and the second definitely needed dispatching quick, they were in no rush though. Also thought the guys were teaching him how to suck eggs with the anatomy lesson. I'm sure he knew this already but I guess the names were new

Always good to get more hunting shows on nz TV and full credit for that. Never seen dogs being used that way so was interested in the idea.

Just sat down to watch it the second time... Real hunting done the Te Urewera way, different to a lot of people but extremely legitimate and succesful. The shooting scenes could have done with better editing from a eye to the general public viewing, but hey for a first show I was very impressed. Definately looking forward to future episodes!!!!

I think Owen is going to make a great success of this and good on him, he comes across well and practices what he preaches - too much!

Great no frills hunting show that looked real and not scripted to hell.
Re the messy kill - shit happens not a shocker really.
I find the other shows where there are pig hunting stories that show scenes of dogs holding pigs a lot more distasteful especially when its obvious the dogs have been holding it for a while waiting on the camera to arrive.
Hunting is relaxing just like Yoga except I get to kill something.

    Just watched online

A good show all round but agree with above that a faster finishing shot was needed in both cases

It's the sport of kings mate. Running things down with dogs and killing them is as old as mankind's relationship with the dog itself

Agreed. Now if I could just get my hell hound to chase the deer towards me instead of the opposite....

the video explains all Pengy, you have to start the dog at the tops of watersheds and send them down natural stops like rivers and bluffs to the shooters Deer always stay in front of the dogs, they bounce off for a bit, then stop, bounce off etc. The way those deer were just trotting down the river means it was done correctly, not with a dog up its clacker. To those that complained about the shooting, it happens. Anyone who hasn't pulled off a bad shot hasn't been hunting long. We all do it. This was just shown as it was, which I think is the theme of the program. a much more real approach to some of the contrived hunting shows on TV.

Which brings me to say, I really enjoyed it. I relate more to this show than the others, in fact I can't stand some of the contrived shit that ends up in some of those hunting shows. this was much more honest, and didn't try to be anything it wasn't. Well done Toa hunter gatherer!
