    Tongariro National Park Winter Hunt

    Hey Guy's,

I was looking at going to the Whakapapaiti Hut in the Tongariro National Park at the end August with a couple of mates.

    https://www.doc.govt.nz/parks-and-re...kapapaiti-hut/

I was wondering if anyone has had any luck up there?

Both mates have pulled out so I am thinking twice about soloing it in the middle of winter but would like to head there at some point.

Any pointers or feed most welcome.

That hut/valley was where I saw my first wild deer back in the early 80's! I'm tempted to go in during summer for an "old time's sake" hunt. Hell; I may even find the Gerber knife I lost that I had saved for forever on apprentice wages! Sorry not to answer your question; but good luck

We use to have more luck back in the 1990’s camping closer to Hauhungatahi. Did one trip into Whakapaiti staying at the hut but didn’t see any.

A few deer up on Hauhungatahi and in the flats below it. Bush is average though

The bush is well below average. It was a morning and evening hunt watching the flats.
