Thread: tramping/hiking into roar blocks during ballot

So-
say you wanna hike into a spot an low an behold, its a "roar ballot block"..... but you're not hunting- what do you guys think about this , or the "rules" around this?


say you werent a hunter an didnt know about it but walked into a hut that was in the ballot system ---- problem?

well we put up with dickheads still fishing after season has closed on lake with duckshooters trying to enjoy opening weekend.

we have walkers around edge of same lake....

we dont get a closed off area all to ourselves.....

we also have blocks here in south canterbury that are shut for hunting all summer so trampers can be undisturbed.....and they allowed in blocks over winter which doesnt seem to cause issues....
huts are either booked in advance or first in first served
so what eggzachary is your point????

I would say (applying common sense) if you ain't carrying a rifle or a bow then there is no problem, fill your boot.
Roar Ballot blocks I would assume mean you have to successfully win the ballot for hunting access (ie a valid hunting permit)

point is , im walking into balloted areas.

want to see if theres actual rules on hiking in whilst some yahoos are looking for non existant deer. (haast pass region)

What was your point, again?

if you are worried about it contact the people who run the ballot/blocks and are you intending to carry a firearm??? that would be a gamechanger.

im in agreeance of this also- havnt found anything too specific on the idea though , possibly worth shooting DoC an email i suppose

and if you think haast area has no deer....... yeah nah cant even be bothered typing anymore.

the ballot blocks can still have other public land users on them at any time (trampers, anglers etc) but only the permitted party can hunt that area during that ballot period. huts are also for everyone to use but the first in first served usually means hunting parties get setup before trampers etc come along anyway. if you wanted to go for a look nothing is stopping you but you know there will be hunters around so do it safely.

Well worded.

Balloted roar blocks probably have a lower density than other "open hunting" blocks which can be full of dickheads.

Hiking during the roar?

Make sure you wear blue!

Theres 11 other months of the year to go tramping(none armed) thru a roar block area.Why bother go tramping thru a roar block in April.Bit stupid i recken.

Bit of a silly thing to say.. hunters do their ting year round, trampers and various other rec users do their thing year round, why should the roar be any different?

To Rees - every public land hunting ballot tends to have a few differences, but none grant you sole use of the land that I’m aware of, and nor should they. So if you want to leave the rifle at home and go tramping, then go for it.

Some ballots work by granting your party the only valid hunting permits for that area/period, some like the tahr ballot grant exclusive heli landing rights only, and others will still be able to walk in and hunt those areas at anytime. (Or helihunting, but that’s a different matter..)

If you want to know the specific rules about a certain ballot then have a read of the ballot terms on the DOC site if you can find them, or just flick an email through to them.

No its not a silly thing to say.Its a safer way to approach the situation for a none hunting person.

What wap block you got again? Might head in for a tramp.

Sorry but you are clearly a hunter, actively tramping in a ballot block when you probably no it will annoy the hunting party a bit seems like a weird idea.
