I am sick of not going hunting so I'm going to do something about it. Thinking of Turangi area (just because) maybe 2nd week of May. Never been before, don't know any areas any help is appreciated.
Thanks

If you don't get Dirt, Blood or Grease under your nails it ain't a hobby
What are you wanting to hunt? Japs or reds... second week of May will be good, i often aim to go out on opening weekend as everyone else is off duckshooting.
That's a good plan actually. I'm not fussed what I chase both or either.

Have a look at google earth and look up "beggs pool " this should put you at a power station. but follow the roads around this is mostly sika but there is some good country in there. There are plenty of areas to walk in off the tracks and roads in the area.
Hope this helps. if you cant figure out where you are send me a pm and i will give you as much info as i can.
Thanks TwoShot. I'll Check it out

I spent a weekend up the Waipakihi river from 12th-14th.
Nice spot, bush can be open in places and very closed in in others.
According to the guy walking out as we walked in, he reckoned they hadn't started yet, but we heard stags roaring on the Sat and Sun so i reckon (IMO) that they were just starting.
If the hind isn't serviced she will cycle after 28 days, i'd plan for a trip for 10th-12th May, that way you might be able to find a stag or two as they could start to roar again.
Hope this helps

Kiko road has been closed due to fire risk. Not sure if it is open now that we have had rain
Keep your head down in the waipakihi - gets quite a bit of traffic
Shows how long I've been away from home! Waipakihi has always been thrashed, much better off the TPD roads for overnighters. Kaimanawa Road and Tree Trunk Gorge Road always had moderate numbers of japs. PM if you want a few more ideas
kiko road is open, because its handy it gets thrashed as well. BUT go for a look during the week, lots less peeps then. its not a bad spot. turangi is not far from nat park. get a permit and hunt the mountain. sometimes you dont have to go far from the road. plenty places about. call in at the doc office which is just off the turangi, tokannu road in turangi and quiz the doc guys. they can be helpful if you talk to the right one.
That's more the area I was thinking of. Is Tokannu Road SH47?
