I don't know what you guys are on about haha I was there in October one year we left Harkness hut and walked up to Tussock and it was the hottest dam day it was 30 degrees and we even had whirlwinds hitting the clay pan and when we got to the hut there was a box of speights left in there and we couldn't help ourselves drank a beer each and had a sleep on the massive deck . Was crazy. Saw deer anywhere between Harkness and about an hour south of tussock . Mainly on the bush edge like has been mentioned. Good luck enjoy your trip

Lot of difference between September and October in there, plus the actual weather pattern at the time.
