Will be cold, take plenty of coal.
I've only ever been in there in Summer/Spring & have always done well, heading in there again in November & Feb.

Will be a lot different in winter, but from my experience if you get the good weather in spring/summer you would be hard pressed not to see plenty and get a few.

    Good luck!

I've hunted there a couple times in the winter, hard going but did see animals out in the open even in a hard snow.

Theres good shooting pads where you would expect on the side ridges down valley. Some pretty long shots in there in places though, up over 600m fairly easily across gully shots.

Usual winter conditions apply in the Bush. Fairly shitty bush in spots with snow damage and bush lawyer, but also some super open bush up valley from the hut. Plenty of deer in the area, just got to do the yards to find where they are hanging out. Mint hut

Will definitely be cold in winter.
Be careful navigating in the dark in there. There is often very narrow but deep and incised small seepage/streams amongst the tussock that are quite hard to see under torchlight and you can do yourself some serious injury inadvertently stepping into one. I fell about 2 metres into one in the dark there, bit of a fright but not injured thankfully. Admittedly several years ago before I had super bright LED torches.

Went ok, shot 5 animals, saw about 20. Bumped nothing in the bush, and had a few spots that saw them coming down through each arvo quite late. Did Ober 60km of bush stalking with sign, but nothing fresh. Maybe the cold pushed them deeper into the bush, or we walked past bunches of them tucked under thicker bush trying to keep warm. No idea, now even whistled at until we had shot some. Great place, tried to leave a bag of coal, but we ended up having to stay an extra night as the fog rolled in the day we were due to leave stranding us for an extra day!

Considering the pressure it receives it always seems to produce high numbers...

If you get some decent weather in there it's game on!

Yeah, I think while we were there it was too hut during the day, and way to cold as soon as the sun disappeared. Eg.-2 overnight easily. I'd say spring / summer there would.be amazing!

We were there in summer & they seemed to be everywhere, took 6 home but could easily have been more.

Will be passing through again in November from the Boyd out to Poronui.
