    Twizel/Tekapo day hunt for tahr/chamois

    Hi all,

I've been reluctant to ask this as I'm usually keen to just do some research and go exploring and find out for myself but given this is more of a one-off trip it would be ideal to have some pointers, more so for safety and time well spent.
My family and I will be travelling south from the north island in a weeks time and will be making our way down the west coast and across to Wanaka and Queenstown and back up along the east side.
We will be spending a couple of days around Twizel and Tekapo and would like to try and go for a day hunt somewhere.
We will have a 4WD but don't want to do anything too serious as it is our transport home. No snorkel.
I don't expect us to shoot anything but will be grateful to just be in some big country and love for the family to have a chance at seeing a tahr or chamois even if it's out of reach.
Kids are 9 and 16 and well used to climbing hills.
I have done a few 10 day trips for tahr/chamois on the west coast but never hunted on the east side.

From my research so far, the most likely options I'm considering at the moment are: Jollie River and Hopkins River.

I'm mindful that the weather may throw any plans out the window...

Many thanks in advance for any advise received.

    Cheers,
    Jamie

Hoophorn stream on the edge of Mt Cook national park is easy access and good for a day hunt. Snow will be the limiting factor.

Like Stug said Either Twin stream, Bush or hoop horn stream on the way up to Mt Cook would be an easy park and Walk

Bottom of Hopkins on left, north and south temple? North branch is an easy hunt up to the heads, might be a wee bit cold tho.

The fireplace in the temple shelter was destroyed and boarded up when I was up there a month ago, looks like lucky not to take the shelter out actually

Thanks very much for all the advise received. I really wish we had more time to explore multiple areas but will make the most of the time we have.
Now if you could please organise some nice sunny weather for us @Trout that would be great

Hi all, have just got home to the Manawatu late last night after a huge 9 days around the South Island.
It was an amazing trip in so many differen't ways.
I have been blown away by the many messages of advise I have received from members of the forum.
I can confirm that lines were tight and barrels were hot. I'm planning to do a trip report very soon to share some photos and experiences.
Thanks once again to everyone who passed on advise and options for hunting, my family had such a great time in the outdoors thanks to you.
