Two Mates a 308 and some Fallow

Yesterday was one of those cloudless Hawkes Bay afternoons, sun loitering off the main range and thistle down hangs in the air. Two lads caught up under a wide Tōtara tree and decided that covering ground for a Fallow far more entertaining than loading firewood into a Ute.

From a high point my guide soon had a target rich valley sorted.

Covering open ground and navigating other living alarm systems adding to the fun, a hidden pond surprised both Lads and waterfowl as we froze and hoped no paradise ducks were in residence.

Luck on our side we carried on into a small Tōtara covered creek/gully system enabling an approach downwind and out of sight

Climbing out to the next high point and crawling into position we put the 308 where it could survey the valley

Fallow calmly went about their day, unaware. Assessing their placement and escape path through the Leupold Sakos bolt was shut and off we go

All in all a stunning afternoon with the best company you could ever hope for and no carrying of firewood or deer :)

Nothing like a bit of private land hunting, if you can get it..well done.

Cracker day! What more could you ask for. Will you bone them out for the freezer or make sausages/salamis/biersticks out of them? The butcher we got to process our last fallow made some family sized pies from them - another superb way to enjoy prime venison.

Oh dear, now you will find yourself in a conundrum as to whether Sika or Fallow is your favoured back steak. What a fantastic confusion to have.

The softest meat will be lil steakettes and muscle groups suitable for roasts will be put aside for that

Anything untidy and scraps gets minced to be made into Pattie’s, shepherds pie, and mince on nachos etc :)

Quite satisfying the whole process really.

the odd easy one sure makes you appreciate the usual shitty gully at bottom of hill ones more..and vise versa LOL.
enjoy the eating it should be primo tucker.

I can assure you there's nothing easy about these ones.. Heavily hunted, in the open and surrounded, buy livestock, only 7mmsaums crafty skills made it happen
Personally I find deer on public land much easier hunting.

You're very lucky that they went home with ya as every Fallow I've shot on that block ends up in the killing shed I now call the "Tardis" it goes in & is never to be seen again hahahahaha

Fuk Philipo is far to "high end" to get his hands dirty, that what my Famer caffa mate's are for hahahaha
