    unknown sign

So i was out for a wander on Sunday morning and a beauty of a morning it was (weather wise) I didnt run into any animals but found a good amount of sign. I also found some sign that i wasnt sure of. It was on a small mostly dead tree which looked like bite marks. I have seen the chisel like bites that possums use to mark their territory but this looked different to me. I am not aware of goats being in this area but cant say for sure their not. do deer ever eat bark? ive never heard of them doing that?? Any ideas please on the owner of these marks?

Yes deer will chew the bark like this.

I have lots of similar photos from Galatea where the Rusa are.

Must be some minerals in the Cambrian layer that they are after.

    Cheers

Yep deer do it all the time. From what I have seen they mainly chew the bark off Coprosma Grandifolia (google it and next time you are in the bush look for it, the leaves are a give away). It often grows at odd angles (horizontal) and off Pungas. Must have something in it they like. It seems to happen more at certain times of the year. Some places I hunt nearly everyone of these trees has the bark stripped.
