Unprompted bout of roaring in Reds

Occasionally I hear a stag going off for no apparent reason. It seems to be at any time of the day. The most recent I heard was late morning. Roaring 2-3 times a minute over a 20-30 minute period, and seemingly oblivious to any responses from stags (or us) from a distance. Then the stags appear to switch back into normal mode and becomes just as cagey as before, with barely a peep out of them.
Does anyone have any ideas as to what might be triggering this behaviour ?

Could be a hind cycling and a cheeky young stag might be trying to cut in on the action.

Mooseman is probably on the money. No point roaring if the Hinds aren't cycling and there aren't any rival stags in the area.

Slightly different topic, but we had a red stag roaring a week ago and the females started to bark. Not sure if this is normal but my uncle roared while I replied with barks. In a rival stags mind this must have equated to a stag moving in with his Hinds to collect a few of his. End result was a 11pt stag on the deck.

I let out a roar recently using the Graf Caller. One of my neighbours replied, not sure if she was 'cycling' or not but she 'moaned' a bit about the noise! Amazing what you get this time of year...

There's a wapiti sounding thing getting round where I am at the moment and he didn't get the memo about saving the roaring for morning and evening, has random outbursts at all hours of the day but hides behind his little "tresspasers will be prosecuted" sign somewhere
