I presume you know the old Doc hut up there is now run by the the Queenstown Lakes DA? It's awesome.
We saw plenty of deer last time we were in there (2014), but not sure of numbers now. The side creeks held the most deer, but because they're pretty narrow, you need to think about wind movements in them.
Directly across the river and down stream from the hut are some nice terraces to hunt in the bush - its open and the deer lurk in there all day.
We spent a bit of time in the tops, but only saw a few deer, nothing of interest. In the head of Kay Creek I saw a nice young 10 point red and left him, he had 3 hinds with him. Also saw some chamois in the tops also.
