    upper matakuhia

    Has any one being into the upper matakuhia hut or lower matakuhia hut areas .And can you get to the oputeke track start from the naiper taupo road.Me and a mate thinking of doing a trip into that area we can get dropped off and picked up

    I saw something about access on the other forum recently. If I recall, there was an issue with a locked gate off the Taupo Napier, but it has been sorted and access is all good. I`m sure someone with first hand knowledge will put you right though

    I've been into the Upper Matakuhia via Plateau Road access a few times in the last twelve months, like the link to the story on NZ Tramper says it is a unmaintained part of the DOC world.
    Pumice country that moves a lot in heavy rainfall. If bush bashing and crawling through and under windfall rocks your boat the Matakuhia Valley is where you will find it in abundance.
    Without knowing your skill level I would advise that Opureke track would be for the very experienced only. (Topo map essential)

    Hunting the Upper is hard work mate and not a hell of a lot of deer
