    VELVET

After a sucessful outing last night I am now the owner of 2 sets of fallow antlers in the velvet, I know what to do with the rest of the animals but does anyone know if there is a market for fallow velvet and how to preserve it. Its in the chiller at present.

I've been told you can freeze it by a hunting guide for storage purposes. Try contacting some deer farmers on where you can sell it.

Neil Mercer near Pahiatua will buy it. Lives at the foot of the Pahiatua track on the Managamairi turn off corner. He's also paying good money for hard antler at the moment.
Number will be on the book.

Updated: Gave Neil a ring myself but, despite wanting to take it, can't due to food regulations.

Fallow velvet is all immediately classed as low grade, red velvet is worth far more.

Im just trying to remember who was buying it a while ago.

The best way to sell wild velvet is to get a deer farmer to mix it up with their farmed stuff. Some buyers will notice it though because its usually a bit darker than farmed velvet.

totally agree although one of the farmers i know rang the buyer and i sold direct to him and he knew what i had. I must admit that shooting and removing straight away is key, couple of years ago i got $500 from 2 sets
