Understand the above comments. It was a dilemma at the time. Would have rather left him and probably would have in the Tararuas where I normally hunt.
If there was a yearling with it, I would have shot that.
No venison in the freezer for about a year.
The place also gets hammered by the locals spotlighting apparently so if it wasn't me it would have been in someone else's freezer by now (it was on DOC administered land)

As we said back in the 80's "if it moves shoot it - if its standing still - cut it down
