    Waianakarua help

Good morning. I know its usually frowned on to post 'where to find deer' questions, but here goes.
I'm still trying to get onto my first deer. I've done a few hikes at Waianakarua and shot a pig, but never seen a deer. Spooked one once. I'm planning to do a short day trip there within the next week.
Would anybody be kind enough to DM me some pointers on where I could walk at Waianakaruas to have better chance of success of seeing something?

I've done many KM's walking in the main Waianakarua part, but have never been into the Glencoe section. The northern part of the public block.
Been thinking I should try that, see what I can see there

Thanks to those that messaged me. I think I need to spend more time there and my luck will change one day.
Had a nice walk this evening, went in the Glencoe side. The light breeze was in my face. Beautiful evening. I sat and watched the bush edge as the sun went down with a couple mates, unfortunately the only thing that showed itself was a rabbit. Heard a couple deer bark in the distance. A good time had by all.
    Maybe next time!

Used to hunt wainaks alot, place Used to be full of deer (4years ago) can't imagine it's changed. Just need to beat the feet and get a wee way into the block. Think the steep country put a few folks off!

Always used to be lots of deer in there. Should still be. Get in there and walk. It’s not really easy ground but very huntable.

Knowing that Brad has long legs he would cover the area in a hour or two...... All the best mate, hope you get your venison soon

Ha thanks billbob. On the contrary, my legs nearly died when I last walked to staircase hut with a heavy pack on. Spent a night there, fantastic place. Some of that land is very steep for sure

Anyone know if the forestry roads are open at the bottom of the block? To the west of Hampden? I have tried calling the forestry company multiple times and haven't had success. Should give good access to the bottom of the block

Must be a few deer about, come down through Green Valley a year or two back and was a red hind dead on the side of the road and the remains of some headlights strewn about. Only time I've seen one hit on the road other than the school bus in Tapanui having a fallow buck go through the windscreen.

Members of the Oamaru deer stalkers can get a key to gain access through the forestry, maybe a member on here can help you

No they can't help access through the forestry. It's strictly NZDA members only. (Rules imposed by forestry company.) @Brad S you would need to be an NZDA member and even then, there are very strict conditions.
