    Waiawa, Te Urewera

    Good evening Gents.

A mate and I are thinking of heading into the Waiawa next month. Ive never been there.
Has anyone been in there in the last year? What's the hunting like?
Any idea of Deer numbers? Apparently a year or two back there was a pack of dogs running loose in there. Does anyone know if they are still around?
Any info appreciated. PM me with your secret spots if you want..

    Thanks in advance.

Still packs on wild dogs in Te Urewera. Hunting mate saw some gnawing on a deer as he flew over in the chopper. Unsure exactly where.

I have done 1/2 a dozen hunts since mid 1990's the last one about 3 years back. Always late spring End Oct to End December.
Always deer on or around the river eating the grass.
One Morning about 11am I spooked a nice Hind and yearling, dog winded them in the middle of the river as I walked through a punga grove but by the time I got the rifle off my pack and found my ammo they had crossed and I watched them walk up into the bush.
Came back the following morning and got the yearling. Kicked myself but we had done a day break hunt and my mates had decided to do a loop up and around to the south. I was a bit sore so decided to just check out the river and the side creek by the possum trappers hut down stream.
I have got lucky every time and carried out meat.
My last trip a year or 2 after the change of ownership It had been busy with a party in every week for the preceding 6 weeks.

As above just note the the large grass areas you walk through are Maori land and expect to see horses.
Locals used to have a camp just where the track comes down to the valley floor.

    PS
Been a very long time but lots of sign up high on the track over to the Whakatana River,
Head up the Waiawa stream just past the possum trappers hut.
AND LOOK OUT FOR ONGAONGA. That stuff bites.

Ongaonga is everywhere but the track up out of tha Waiawa Stream has trees of the stuff you need to push through.

    I do both.
    Beautiful hearty country.
If I knew how to upload to YouTube I’d post up a few clips.
