    Waikaremoana

Thinking of going to the lake for a few days next week. Staying at mokau landing camp and day hunting up a few tracks (mokau tarns, animanawa, hopuruahine strm)

Hope the crowds have gone. How's the lake for spin fishing the edge?

The old Toby, good to know.
Made up a koura trap. Put some Manuka brush and a punctured can of catfood fish in it.

Haven’t been to Waikaremoana for years! Are the trampers still doing the lake walk? Used to be loads in the summer and you could never get room in the huts. Are the huts still there?

I hope you dont plan to use that Koura trap in Waikaremoana - you realize that may well be illegal - now I dont know the ins and outs of its legal protection - certainly under DOC koura were protected in the lake - I dont believe that will have changed -trout a license yes - Lazza as far as I know only Wanganui hut has gone - but friends who have been recently all say the huts now very run down and the place is not looked after - spinning from the shore try at night -day time its clear water and spinning does not work well - the lake is more known for flyfishing from the shore - try flicking out a big dark fly at night and even try a mouse fly - now I have not tried it but you may be able to use spin gear rigged with a fly - check your license conditions - I always wanted to give it a go - despite living there as Senior ranger I did not fish much as I simply did not like trout

some of the huts are still there, I remember I called up the information center recently and they directed me to a website that shows which huts are still around or have been removed.
