    Waitomo run ins

Hey Guys, anyone on here hunt waitomo regularly? Went for a walk in public block last month with fly rod and no rifle and found what I suspected in there (plenty of pig goat and deer sign)

Went back yesterday and pretty much got told by neighboring property to F*** off and not steal from their cupboard before we had even walked out the carpark.

Should have pushed on as where we were going was all Doc land and perfectly legal but didn't fancy coming back to a vandalized or stolen vehicle.

On a positive we drove on to another block and got a nice fat red so not all bad.

Keen to hear from anyone else that's had this issue in that area and how they have dealt with that sort of thing.

    Cheers

Considered that and reporting to Doc but not sure it will get much traction. Ideally I'd like to be able to have a civilized conversation with these plonkers to assure them I have no interest in poaching their neighboring land. I'm sure that they have had that in the past but at end of day it's public land and there needs to be mutual respect.

Consider they may have an ulterior motive to keep you from seeing what’s happening on “ their” land

Sounds like far more hassle than it’s worth, I’d find another area

Set a game camera up looking at your vehicle if you go back, then at least if the do anything to it you have it on camera for the cops

If it was late March I could understand.
The other thing is that we were only going to bang over a goat for a curry and flick some Flys around.

You were restrained and left.good for you. Steal from Thier cupboard is a bit rich if your taxes pay Thier dole money. The older I get the less tolerant of bully tactics.if not too far to drive, get dropped off and picked up later.i wouldn't rape n pillage the area, but if you in legit area.would not stop going. Personally only encountered that sort of thing once, and it was a fella in blue uniform doing the harrassment.

Same experience as you MD - raised a few eyebrows at the time. Relatives of mine have a lease on a native block with pretty restricted access and surrounded by some rugged arse public land (very gorgey and some parts near vertical). They stumbled over a poacher in there one day - the local cop as well. Just shows you can get an entitled bad apple in every bunch I think.

Best to avoid where you can, pricks like that don't seem to have the capacity to think through the entire chain of their actions. You don't need the hassle of stupid factor like that. Find another way in, or get dropped off and picked up. I would definitely also report it - it might feel like a waste of time with nothing happening but what it does is build out the file of info going on in that area and can help resolve other instances. Often Police won't have enough to go on in an individual instance to take action, but if there are large numbers of reports being made the issue is obviously a lot more serious.

For my assessment, when people are claiming crap that isn't theirs like this - it's not much different to burglary.

Yeah but we are the only ones with things to loose when it turns to shit. Ive been to the same block as roadtripper and left a note on the door asking for access. All i got told was its Maori land and to F off. Reported it to doc and obviously nothing has changed.

Which forest? PM me iff you dont want it public. I might be able to give an insight. I lived up there until recently and there can be a number of conflicting reasons why you got that reaction. Its an aggressive area of the country with lots of poaching and the poachers can be full on, so the farmers get used to being full on in return. and also a lot of hostility at times from the local iwi too outsiders as well in some spots.

lots of Small-ish blocks of bush surrounded by farmland and almost all the animals except goats come from releases or trophy park escapes, and are guarded like they are owned.

Im not saying that in any way to be read as any form of judgement. If it's a public road and doc land you have every right to access. its really wether its worth the hassle too you.

take some one with you to mind the vehicle and go back - if that person turns up just tell them you are hunting legally and they have nothing to fear from you - you know the boundary - dont let them get away with it

Think I'm at the point where it's too much trouble to deal with to shoot a couple of goats or a fallow, plenty of reds 40 minutes down the road to keep us entertained.

Please do report it. You may think its not worth the while, but it may make the local constabulary do something " Well, that's the 6th report we have had of Joe Bloggs intimidating members of the public" sort of thing.

............Then again they may do nothing

You should have stood firm and carried on,these guys are weak and try to intimidate and they will keep doing it because people do as they say.It will stop only when we dont allow it.the authorities dont care/won't follow up.We need to be peaceful but not harmless with people that try this BS.
