    Wallabies around Rotorua

    Hi All,

I've been hearing more about wallabies around the Rotorua lakes area, and thinking about putting together a hunt with a couple of mates over spring. Does anyone have any hints about where is a good place to hunt hoppers on DOC land, or have any info about any landowners who might be interested in some wallaby control?

Spotlight them. Not allowed on doc though
If you can't kill it with bullets, dont f*ck with it.

Plenty around Lakes Okataina and Tarawera. As stated, spotlighting on DOC land is forbidden. Centrefire rifle needed, but you MAY be given permission to use rimfire. Generally tracks are also used by mountain bikers or walkers, so care needed. I’ve tried to get access to pvt land on a couple of occasions, but farmers 1 and 2 wanted $$$ so I flagged it.
I suggest ultra early walk into the bush off the Lake Okataina road in the hope you catch a couple out returning to bed as they’re mostly nocturnal.

Would agree with the above. As a visitor from out of town, I've had no problems seeing a few in the areas mentioned, but don't expect large numbers and fast and furious sport. For that, you will need access to private land.
