Marinated some wallaby back steaks and bbqed them last night. Delicious and tender. I want more. Can anyone recommend a good area in the North Island. Closer to Northland the better. Also has anyone eaten the back legs?

Sure do, though they are likely bigger than yours. I have separated the muscles out and used for stir fry, or roasted, or casseroled, ... Really nice meat.

looks tasty. I'm keen on a roadtrip to bag a few.
They are hooked on them here. TR wants to bag some herself, just need to find some without the matagouri.
TimeRider doesn't like the matagouri, doesn't like the pointy bits on it, nor spaniard, bush lawyer, ....
Around the lakes at Rotorua,I hunted Okataina. It sure is good meat.
Yip Dundees onto it just walk thru the native anywhere round the Rotorua lakes and pop them off as they pop up. easy.
Id give you some spots but theres so fucken many of them I dont really need too.
Happy hoppy hunting :pacman:
When does the closed season start down there?
Not sure, it used to be on the doc permit when you download it but havent had one of those for a couple of years been getting my fix at work.
From memory its pretty much dec and jan but dont quote me on that.
The pests are the JAFFAs
Rotoma, Rotoehu, Tarawera, Rotoiti, Okataina them feckers are everywhere....
Cool to know. Thanks all. Is that all public access Gibo?
Yeah mate look up the Rotorua lakes area on the Doc website or go into Koordinates and overlay the doc areas.
Koordinates - the one place for geodata
Awesome, thanks
OK. I guess DoC would be the ones to contact about that?
Yip, or look at the open area hunting permit map http://www.doc.govt.nz/global/huntin...-map-small.jpg
Should be sweet in the green areas. Id be inclined to hit that block SE of lake Rotoma.
Shaweet!
I work in the forestry north of the green block that is east of Rotoma, shes fuckin riddled, all our tracks are coverd in prints every morning, see them all over the place. Best place to access is off Matahi road off SH30 by the Rotoma boat ramp, just go up and get into the native at top of the hill. Easy as.
If they run just let out a whistle and they usually will stop and look at you for a few seconds.
They sure are tasty little buggers :yum:
My first Dama Wallaby was shot with a .270 as the permit said no rimfires. I wanted a life size mount from the taxidermist but the .270 gave a new meaning to stuffed:wtfsmilie:
Not long ago a firewood merchant was working in our block and his dog took off down into our bush, when he went after it he apparently come across a Scotsman with a fiddle trying to do some "pied piper" shit to get the wallabies out of the bush before we logged it...to much electric puha for that chap me thinks:wtfsmilie:
He should be on the boat this morning, we need a little more wind!
What a wierdo. Too many substances for sure. Thanks Big Foot a mate of mine in the forestry up here suggested similar.
