Rumpys suggestion is a good one if you are looking at pubic land options. I used to see them often enough on the track and managed to run the odd one over on the road coming home from a run in the dark.

Another option is Lake Okataina – drive down the road leading to the lake and take your pick. They won’t be far from the grass.

If you have a boat then Tarawera is a good option.

If you really get stuck then PM me then I’ll pass on some property details in Okareka that I’ve shot them on in the past. They may let you onto their place (you will have to do the leg work) and I can almost guarantee you will see them. Mind you that was 15 years ago when I lived there!

There are heaps in the pines around Rotoiti too. I went for a daytime wander just exploring and bumped at 5 or 6 in 15 minutes all with 200m of the lake edge.
