    Waro oteake conservation park

Just had a read of this on the huntmate Facebook page incase anyone wants to no.

Hunting needs tobe valued!! Instead the likes of #alpinehelicopters Alpine Helicopters Wanaka rape our public resources. Shooting hundreds of deer from the Hawkduns Range, Oteake today.
What can be done Game Animal Council, NZDA, Hon James Meager?
1080 the Catlins this morning now this, we definitely don't feel our interests are being well represented.
Just before the roar, the highlight for many

I'm told nz is over run with deer, certainly fallow for one. They be everywhere. More food for the leftover ones, remember well meat hunting the Paringa, one under each arm and one in the pikau and keep hunting.
    Don't want that.

Yeah people keep pushing that narrative.

and at the same time dont want hunters crossing their land, or dont want to share "their" spots...

you are right STC much of the high numbers are private land - friends culling deer on private land for Commercial Pest control companys pass on info on very high numbers in some areas - but then look at some of the country that the Duleys pass thru hardly call that high numbers in some areas - DOC should give hunters a fair go and suspend waro and aerial 1080 for the roar period but sadly they have a very poor history of considering hunters - some areas do many dont care - try the new Minister of Hunting see if you get a reply -

There is a non WARO period over the roar period.

Shame to hear that. My friend here probably hanging in a meat tuck now
Taken off my phone, no spotter attached. I wouldn't say the numbers were as plentiful in there as it used to be 5years ago

Its hard to find them up here and get access, then you have 1080 it several big areas. Mt Arthur region and Rainbow, having only been back here 18 months and not being a hunter until a few years ago I still trying to get my head around where the deer live.

Plenty on the fringes of Nelson but too close to town.

Not sure about the non Waro period over the roar, i have seen choppers shooting in oteake myself late March, they roar early in there 20th March to start of April is ideal in there.
Was in there yesterday and few stags i seen were going already.
Always disappointing when they hammer the areas that are easy access for the public just before the roar.

There is Waro going on in Marlborough too.
We were in the mountains behind Waihopai last week and watched a chopper shooting the shit out of it.
Heard hundreds of shots, worked the area all morning 2 days in a row.
Shot a stag right under us. 99% sure it was Precision Helicopters, saw the machine up close, Red grey and black 500.

We were in there a week and saw not one mature stag.
Only hinds and spikers. We’ve been hunting this area for 15 odd years, know it pretty well, we were either very unlucky or he’s targeting bigger animals for the body weight.

Shooting bigger bodied animals best for them, way it is unfortunately. Unless someone is going in there on foot and selectively shoot a few hundred a year there’s no alternative. Will still be the odd clever old donk getting around somewhere.

    Who owns it?
It was definitely the machine on their website.

Without stating a rego you saw through your bino's - colour of a machine/type wouldn't stand up. Can't beat the camera.
