Why? Im not the one making unsupported claims that tissue paper contains fibres? that scratch glass. The grit and shit on your lense is what does that so over time (still no length given) you will scratch them with whatever you wipe them with.

Evidence showing TP is no better than microfiber cloth please ;)
Sure

I've heard that professional photographers use toilet paper to clean their $40,000.00 lenses. I mean...why not? Professionals are always budget conscious, and if cheap toilet paper is effective at cleaning lenses, without doing any damage, and at a significantly lower price than microfibre cleaning cloths...it's a no brainer!! Right? Right? Riiiiight?
Ha ha fuck this iz fun
I use a microfiber cloth at home and tissue or TP in the bush have done for years, I have noticed on my oldest scope a leupold 2x7 (35 years old) it does have slight scratching that doesn't seem to have affected it much and have used TP on it a lot over the years. As Gibo said it's more the crap on the lens that scratches than the TP.
If you are worried about the effects of TP on the lenses rather than wipe them just dab the lenses to soak up any water. Also I think it takes a long time to see the effects of wiping the lenses with TP.
Don't use PNG toilet paper. Single ply sandpaper. After one week i was almost red raw! Then I had 3 weeks to go haha
A small piece of chamois is really good because you can squeeze it out and it still absorbs water when wet it doesn't just smear it around. I personally use tissues for my eyes tp for my bum and lens cloth for lenses but that's just me. I agree that it's not a good idea to rub a lens with anything unless you've washed grit and grease off first.
I don't think I have ever brought a fancy cloth. Every time you buy optics or glasses you get a free one. I have a pile of about 20 in my hunting gear that I use and then wash regularly.
But if wiping it with TP make you happy and you don't believe the great google then carry on.
Only wet weather prep I do is, when cleaning, oil the barrel inside and out when putting it in the safe then when going for a walk run a pull-through
Stainless barrel is good to go and just wipe blue barrel with an oiled patch when heading out the door
When cleaning rifle I use a lens pen and keep one in gun bag
Flip up caps to keep debris out which is worse when wet
Tried bicycle inner tube once but did not know about a white powder on the inside till looking through and had nothing to clean with
Dabbing with toilet paper clears enough to see
Bog roll is the universal wipe, be it your arse or your lenses. I prefer Cotton Soft for mine :) what about you @Gibo bugdet single ply? Sounds like you're tight enough to get by without wiping your orifice :D
That's the pussy stuff.
Get into this shit mate, no more brown skids, just red

How has this turned into a cost thing? I was only after proof that t paper/tissue damages lenses, so far I have none. And if you guys are so adamant that micro fibre cloths don't damage lenses show me that proof, until then boot it :)
PS: I use a lens pen when home or range and whatever I can when hunting :D
Toilet tissue paper does indeed damage lenses, whether it be photographic telescopic or rifles scopes. In the old days of soft glass, it would actually etch the glass itself, leaving ""çleaning marks"" being tiny scratches. With modern harder lens glass it will wear off the chemical coatings on the lens, that reduce glare and increase contrast. The best thing to do with your lenses is simply not to touch them. But hunting being what it is, use a very soft cloth, and dab material off, dont scrub it.
The thing with most cloths is when wet they are useless, a small scrap of dry TP can be used to dab off water and tossed, get a new bit out of your dry location if you need to do it again. I would hazard a guess most of the people that are so anal about not using it don't even go out in the rain :D
Chamois. Works when wet.
Toilet paper is for the weak. I use my finger
Gibo, in my earlier reply I stated that my old Leupold has fine scratches from years of being wiped with shit paper ( 35 Years) so to answer your question does TP damage lenses the short answer is yes but I must say it took a long time and the scope is still usable today. Like I said a proper cloth is better but TP is better than nothing.
Back in the day when we were 10foot tall, full of shit and bullet proof our scopes glass was sort of protected by a strip of stretched bike rubber.
During wet conditions we had a ball of crap paper tucked away in a dry pocket, used it for years on wet glass.
As for stuffing up any lens coatings I wouldn'nt know as the scopes were always clear,or seemed to be. I sold an old scope a ways back that I'd used for decades and always been treated with the crap paper, still very sharp and clear, maybe it was blessed lol.
I too am a paper fan as it absorbs water like nothing else and I have never noticed any deterioration in my scope lenses. The key is to dab it lightly until dry and then give it a single soft wipe. Don't do it as though you are trying to sand a dent out of an old gun stock.
I also use an old piece of bike tyre tube on the ocular end of the scope. In dry conditions it is folded back over the eye piece and when wet I roll it out so there is about 25mm sticking out. Does a really good job of keeping water off the lens if you are a bit careful. Flip up Butler creek see through cap on the objective end.
