    West coast river hunting

Been invited on a jet boat hunt on the coast next weekend.

Have only really hunted tops on the east coast before , after some advice on how to approach river flat hunting . What to look for in a campsite or just any tips really . Only Chance I'll have to get there for a while wanting to make the most of it

Don't point loaded rifle over wind screen while travelling at speed, sudden stop and you will blow the bow off...I know this cos I witness it happening back in the good ol' days of swan shoots on Tauranga Harbour.

Hard case. Used to be on those in the early 90's. Do they still do them? Our IBC struggled to get up on the plane with so many swan on it. Crikey they were heavy. That Mike Darling was a character with his jet ski.

Take a reasonably small knife and you can fillet the sand flies

Be aware of the catabatic (sp?) winds. Even in smallish valleys on the west coast of the North Island the wind blows down valley until about 10am each morning.

Take a spare battery and bilge pump for the boat for when you leave it tied up at night on a tight line, and wake up in the morning to find its full of water. Find some good clearings and camp a km or 2 upstream or downstream depending on your wind, most guys camp up too bloody close to the good bits.

    Have fun and learn
In the 90s went up the Motu River by boat. Didn’t see anything. Did it rain. Take a sizeable blue tarp and rope if weather looking a bit iffy

Walk the bush edge or the river edge not the middle of a clearing
