Western Ruahines in an easterly

Been going through a bit of a dry patch in the bush hobbiting department lately so though a change in scenery might be in order.

Was thinking about going down the road (4hrs or so) to try a bit more open country and thought that an easterly might be okay as it should be a bit sheltered on the western side.

I'm now reconsidering as it may well be a right pain in the a... with swirling wind etc

Also wondering if it is to late to find them by glassing.

Any feedback from those that know is appreciated.

I don't need to drive 4 hours to hunt with the wind up my bum as I seem to manage to do that rather regularly around here :thumbsup:

If there's an easterly nudging the Ruahine main range, the western side will have cloud banking up and all visibility will be lost for the critical 2 hours or so in the evening and the same in the morning.
And possibly all day.
That's if your up on the tops. You should be okay down in the streams slip shooting though.

Need to find some slips man, wind seems to be all over the show in every wind direction haha

Any wind in the Ruahines is a pain in the bum.
This time of the year can be hard going.

Western Ruahines are cloud city. Just wait for a decent high and period of settled fine weather. Or as Nimrod says, hunt the slips/gulley heads/ warm sheltered spots. other option is to get half an hour or more from the road end in behind the farmland. There will be deer traffic through that country right now.

yep wind swirl is always an issue i almost plan to go with the easterly wind direction when bush hunting the southern ruas as it always goes over top and back up.

As already mentioned an Easterly = cloud up high! Have been up the top several times with a light Easterly in the evening get to my spot see deer immediately only to have cloud roll in over the top FAST turning what was 5 minutes earlier a beautiful evening into pea soup. shouldn't be too bad down at lower altitudes but makes for swirly/inconsistent wind conditions

Just looked at the forecast for Southern Ruahines where i live in Palmy and strong southeast winds so it will be horrible anywhere with a bit of altitude.
