In this neighbourhood it's .270s or 7mm08s for deer guns. Just depends what 'side' you want to be on ;-)
That's for every species (including big roaring red stags) from 10yards to 600yards.

just to be different 300 win mag, shot my dads the other day and loved it, you can reload or buy factory ammo, excellent up close and your still able to reach out further without changing firearms. if you want to try before you buy we can jack up a gong smashing with a wide range of cals and see which you prefer. but seriously the 243 will see you right from day one here.
stick with what you have got and know, 243 is a great caliber, most animals in the north island are shot well within a 243s range, south island? could be different
