What the deal with the roar

Sorry for the dumb question but I know the roar can be a dangerous time of year. Was heading out camping this weekend on some doc land and wanted to take the gun and hopefully bag some meat. But I’m not sure if it’s a good idea. We have a permit for the area but have never gone out this time of year unless with older experienced huntersthat know all the ins and outs.
Do we need to apply for a seperate licence for the area for this time of year? I seen something about a ballot but that was down south. I don’t want to piss anyone off or get in trouble. We have just been wanting to go to this spot for a while now. Sorry to sound stupid but better to know than not.

ok i'll kick it off .......you have a permit your good to go no special secret handshake or extra liscence needed . the roar in the waikato probably hasnt really kicked into gear tho you might get a lazy roar on occasion. nows a good time to go you might even bag a stag in hard antler most guys doing the roar will be waiting another 2 or 3 weeks (easter can be quite scary in some doc lands)

Great thank you just didn’t want to get caught out. We came across another hunter a while ago who was pretty feral thinking we were after his pigs on doc land. We had a permit but didn’t bother him and we weren’t even interested in any pigs just checking the spot out. Spoke to another guy who said some get a bit feral over their spots around now and we need to make sure we have all our shit together.

yea well DOC land belongs to no 1 person it belongs to all of us (those sorts of people make the rest of us look bad) so get out there and have a go . where you headed ?

So long as you are permitted no worries, there are a few that get stroppy about areas but just remind them that it is public land and you have as much right there as they do. It would be a good time to check that area out you have been wanting to now before it does get real busy. Good luck.

Hi @Chelsea, well I can fully understand your comment about a grumpy pig hunter because there are three or four guys around here at the top end of the Kaimais who are utter dickheads. Having done a lot of work with some of the land owners in the area on access agreements, track building and various resource consent type stuff, I know how they feel about the behaviour by these guys, using farm tracks to access DOC blocks that are landlocked by private land, without permission, treating DOC land like they own it.... cutting locks, removing signs and one case of simply driving over two fences to get round a staunch gate. The age old "paper road" type arguments.

What makes it even more frustrating is that I can think of one father and son combo in particular who simply don't care that everybody knows who does this - them! The old man will park the same old ute in plain sight as a big fuck you to whoever wants to take him on. Don't bother saying anything about the police and trespassing... I know our local senior sergeant and whilst he finds this kind of thing very frustrating it is close to the bottom of his list of things to do today.

The attitude amongst the farmers I've worked with around here is to try and ignore it, because if you take action against these guys they will come back with revenge actions, probably a long time later, they won't forget. Access to the one DOC block has actually been opened up across private land, but just not advertised, so the local pig hunter(s) can go there without causing any trouble. That they do not stay in the DOC block and stray happily and wilfully into the private pine plantations is another matter altogether... A lot of this stuff has been going on for two or three generations between families, land owners on the one side and local riff raff on the other.

My advice to anyone coming across a territorial hunter with a bad attitude is just to be pleasant and polite and walk away. This is particularly true in areas near traditional "hot spots", e.g. Pipiriki, others. There is absolutely nothing worse than getting back to the trailhead and finding your vehicle has been trashed. It's just not worth the confrontation.

We had an incident in Taranaki a few years back, we parked on private land with the permission of the owner/or occupier( not sure if he owned the property) anyway we went for our hunt for a couple of days but when we got back my truck had three flat tyres one stabbed two with valves cut off. After a three hour walk out to find your vehicle like that sucks big time. Had to climb up to a high point to ring out and get help. The owner loaned me two of his tyres that fitted my truck and I still had one good one and the spare, to this day I believe it was his kids that did it but can't prove it. Apparently they aren't there no more.

Had the same on the Te Tuhi track road. On the Tauranga side. Used to be open now closed.
Came back from a hunt to find punched tyre. Though hayho changed tyre and took it into get fixed to find some one had put a screwdriver through the side walls. I recon it was the guy that lived off to the left at the gate. I’d waved out when I came back (before discovering the puncher) and saw him through his had in the air and shouted something. Which I later think was f@#* off!
Then the access got closed. Latter heard that the Cops raided a drug lab and weed farm up there. Access was still closed last time I was there and you need to go the the very end of the Whakamarama road now.
If you walk over from the Waikato side there is a faded sign in the bracken that says no access. Think it’s on your right but a good 500meters down from the fork. So if your heads down looking where you want to go you will miss it and run into the unfriendly natives at the other end:(

Te tuhi Road on the waikato side has had great access. At least for the last two years that I've been going there. Richard the farmer is very nice and answers all of my young fella questions.

He used to have a huge issue with people driving up the road to the bush edge with their utes. So the gate is padlocked but you just hop it no issues.

That’s because the previous owner, Gary Sadler, would let a select few regulars drive all the way through and park in that last paddock.

Is it still no dogs allowed through there?

Last time I went there was a no dog sign but having driven all that way I took my dog through. Would not do it again without permission out of respect. Guy was nutting off at the cows on the walk out so avoided him. Parking up in the last paddock would have saved a bit of a walk!

Ah. The truth comes out. I can see how it would get annoying though. His house isn't too far from the road and having utes at all hours would be annoying.

He is very approachable. I've chatted to him at his house twice. Once for directions and the other for a stray cow. I leave the rifle and pack 25 M away though.

I am glad to hear that the farm at tetuhi has changed hand to a nicer guy. I got a few deers and some memorable hunting over the years from that part of the kaimais.

Te Tuhi the Waikato side is were I went for my very first deer stalk:thumbsup: spooked a big old hind in a dirty gully while I was hung up in the Jack with one leg on the ground :XD: and she ran right round me from right to left like in a velodrome:thumbsup: she mars well have been flipping me the bird as she went past:P been hooked ever since.

Not following the rules potentially jeopardises the easement through this farm for all users. There are plenty of access points nearby that permit dogs.

Yeah would not do it again without asking but having driven that long and being with a mate who was not going to move spots because of it I was kind of stuck as not my car.
