Have seen deer do similar teeth marks, but reckon @Sideshow gets the money, territory marking.

See it heaps up there, it’s teething. Supposedly certain nutrients they get out of the bark. Seen it mostly on large-leaves Coprosma.

tram tracks...bulldozer pulling tracks.... if you come to a y junction and dont know which way is out????? think about the dozer towing log or tram with logs on carrages,it CANT turn back on its self so down leg of Y is the way out.
that book by lentle n saxton is great...in fact all four of them are.

That's very useful! Are they mainly located near the bottom of the kaimai's where that motorway goes through it?

dont ask me mate...I live down in the south island, but Ive seen locy/tram tracks in north island bush and indeed even down here over near hoki you can b wandering along in bush and stop and think....that bank looks too square????? then realise you standing in a cutting, gradiant will be gradual if tracks were there whereas a dozer can go plurry steep. google earth is you friend for finding way around, even a techtard like myself can look at home and work out compass bearings to find my way around.
