Stags are all go. Went today, had one going good for quite awhile. 30 mins of cat and mouse roared him in and sht a nice 8 pointer for around here,
Its on!! Story about to be posted
Been in the Raukumaras for the last week. Zero roars heard.
They have started at my place
just returned from a couple of days up behind Rangi hut in Ruahines, plenty of deer seen, mostly hinds and yearlings but managed to get within 50 yards of an 8pt stag probably 3 or 4 years old , he seemed to be still in summer mode, no sign of a mane or swollen neck, and only interested in filling his belly, so i expect the roar is a few weeks away around here which is about normal .

when the hinds start cycling...
The guys on the salmon farm reported stags last night. Seems like it has started, in Marlborough at least.
Started in north pureora. Anyone heard anything in te urewera?
Great photos @30late
I try and go out slightly pre roar because I take my young son. Absolutely nothing other than a few sika hinds in CNI over the last few days but after the torrential rain we had yesterday a few started firing up late last night. Positive covid test sent us home today so will be missing out this year.
Two days ago west of Chch I went to a spot that was holding a few promising stags last roar. Couple of faint moans early on and then nothing heard all day.
Taking my boy out for his first ever roar trip this weekend so for us two, the roars will be hear at 6.30 tomorrow morning as we head up the track! He missed out on his first trip 2 years ago due to lockdown and last year as well, so now as a 8 year old he's super excited to see what all the fuss is about!
Yeah it hasn’t hit me bad at all but I have arthritis in my pelvis which it flared up and my son was the one who tested positive while out and thought he would be more comfortable at home recovering because it was raining non stop for 3 days and he was stuck in the tent. Thank god for a decent tent but by day 3 she was struggling to keep the rain out.
In Te Urewera last weekend, only roar was a Rusa at about 580m elevation. Way early I know, and never heard one before but was no red stag. Kept going for an hour at midday, tried a couple of red moans but no interest.
Anyone know if they’re roaring around Turangi (national park) area at the moment?
The farm boys are pretty vocal this morning, bit cooler last night and still only 7 degrees now.
Had a good slog over the weekend in the Rotorua lakes area, only one daytime roar heard, passed up a spiker in hopes of a decent head. Had a stag going well over night Saturday but silent during the day. Was very warm, in a tee shirt the whole time. Good blow out of the cobwebs and pretty sore today :D
Was out with Shearer and they were roaring even before we could get our campsite set up
Puroera is dead quite. Over night Saturday and didn't hear a thing.
Did my first roar excursion with my boy off the Milford Road. Saw 6 other hunters over the weekend, but no deer. Couple of roars heard on Saturday evening around dusk and a few pre-dawn roars on Sunday morning. Managed to get close to one stag that responded to my calls on the walkout around 2pm, out which my Son really liked. He's keen to get out again so that is a successful trip my books.
Definitely sounds like roar is slightly later this year, southerly should get them going in the north though
Fallow buck croaking and chasing does around during the weekend - Canterbury. Seems pretty early for that.
Fallow croaking over here too. Does don’t appear to be cycling yet though so bucks still pretty friendly to each other.
Reds going at it now.

the roar has started , monday 28th . Got a small 10, and its back steaks yesterday , Took 3 days to catch him .
Good one...earnt.Which forest?
Aaah, really hoping the fallow will still be making noise in a couple of weeks from now. Never actually heard one do that before so it would be a cool experience just to hear croaking in the bush for the first time.
Ive got a block secured thankfully!
Nice, always hot competition around the rut period. Pre rut (ie: now) is a good time to hunt them in the thick stuff also, the bucks seem to hang out around their rut pads thrashing trees etc and generally making a bit of a racket practicing their defence techniques and setting up their love pads.
the stags are roaring thick in our area, hope some good roar stories come out of it, ill just wait till post roar and find the big boys feeding up large out in the open.
In the Oamaru wed-thurs, very quiet and warm temps.
Spent last Tue-Thur in sika country. Mostly quiet as expected with the odd hee haw. Do have a couple single calling after a cold night on Thursday though. Reds still quiet in the local Ruahines mates are telling me.
Very quiet in pureora Wednesday and Thursday. One hint of a roar on Friday morning. One guy shot a roaring stag on the next hill early morning but more because he was stepping into the stag territory. Spook a hind at 35 m that had come to our call.
Hopefully I ll be more lucky this coming week , although the ground is super dry and noisy and there is not much rain forecasted this week :-(
Sitting on the deck at the moment listening to a wild fellow roaring his head off
In the kaimanawas week leading upto Easter. Surely going by then
