    What would you do?

Interesting conversation at work on Friday after the news of missing lady’s remains being found in the Pureoras.

If you find yourself in the unfortunate situation of finding human remains and you don’t have reception or an inreach to message out about it…. Is it an Epirb situation or is it a take photos of the area, mark it on your gps and make some arrows with branches etc on your way out then alert authorities once you have reception?

Not that I’m planning on being in this situation but you never really know what’s in the next gully.

It would hardly be urgent or an emergency , I would mark the spot and notify once out

A PLB activation is for emergencies where urgent help is needed. If the subject is deceased it's not really a PLB situation. If you have the ability to record the position accurately I'd call the police once back in mobile coverage. If using a phone app for position be very sure you are on your current position ( hit the location target on the screen) before marking position.

Mate stumbled onto an urupa at the back of Matiere in early 70's. Bolted out of bush and went to the local marae and asked for a blessing. Best thing he ever did because the locals recognised a white boy with manners. Access became available. Important for him because he travelled from west auckland for his pig hunting.

Photos of the scene, don't disturb the area any more than needed and mark it.

This is something I forgot to mention. DO NOT disturb the scene. Any body found needs cause of death established and touching anything could damage evidence.

Human remains as described in the original post is 100% a police matter.
It’s not within RCCs scope of operation and or budget.
