    Whats the story?

A mate of mine (fellow mainlander) did a road trip for work from Napier to Gisborne and said that there were heaps of goats everywhere from Mahia to Gizzy on the roadside and farmland, even had a sign warning of goats on road. Came across a dead pig as well that must have been skittled while feeding on a goat carcass.
What's the story with all the stinkies up that way, does no one bother shooting them?

It's an export trade - we ship them to the SI as wife's for the locals

Private land I would imagine, with a small cash poor council, so no pest control focus.

Link to map for public hunting land.

Couple of years ago I did a lot of work at Wairoa and the sign warning of goats on the road was extremely apt. It was nothing to see 2-300 on the road and surrounding areas and the wee buggers made a habit of running out without checking right and left first which equals splat

    Yep

There's lots of goats up that way.

They are worth about $40 each when mustered up.

Some farmers are happy for you to shoot them, some see them as a source of income..

    Cheers

There's a huge number on private forestry land between Wairoa and Gisborne as well.
Good luck getting a permit though and have fun if you get caught without one.

most farmers in the area will muster them in, they can fetch between $30-$40 per head and also sell the big ones to the game parks. So yeah unlikly you would get a license to kill. On my cousins farm we harvest some for dog tucker and the rest are sold

Do we "harvest" goats now?? It used to be "knock a few stinkies over" in my day

Yeah I remember seeing one of Tobe's silent movies of him slaying a few. Well it sounds like they are getting away in numbers now the kid is hunting different fields.

god cant even get rid of the goats over there! mates run big places over in wairoa and they save the goats for mustering, good money in it. Alot of the stations over there are the same, muster them for easy cash. We do it on my place here but they are not in plague numbers like the east.
