    What's in your lunch box?

    Hi team,

In search of improved fitness to hit the hills & bush, I'm also keen to look at what I'm eating to fuel the engine.

At the moment, my daily food (exl breaky and dinner): scroggin mix of nuts and bit of dried fruit, few energy balls, 1 square meal bar and few jet planes as a treat.

Keen to hear what you other finely tuned athletes are running in your lunch box to keep you going in the hills or bush bashing?

    Cheers.

I just keep it simple for a day hunt really - but then I am not burning up much energy either - mainly glassing after getting dropped off by side by side - at 73 dont do hills like I used to - sandwhiches luncheon and tomato relish - a cold can of coke as a treat - thats me

I don’t eat much in the hills for some reason - at home I’m always hungry. Snacks are similar to yours. Lunch is about 1/3 of a Brie (doesn’t mind getting warm unlike other cheeses), bierstick & relish on crackers.

I tried those oat crackers (180 degrees & similar) because they have a really high energy / volume ratio, but they were a bit too dry for my liking.

baked oaty slices x2, apple, some sort of heat and eat meal - back country, ration pack or noodles and some easy to chew lollies. (I try and snack every 45min to 1 hour) and a hot chocolate sachet to have with lunch.

Carbs are king when it comes to keeping the body fueled for movement.

When I'm running I try to eat 60-100g of carbs an hour. That's way too much food to carry in in a pack for a multi day hunt and you're not moving with the same intensity generally.

This weekend for a big day trip I cooked up a couple of small beef scotch fillets and took them up cold and had them with some buns and cheese. Kept me going so well. Protein and fat keep you really well satiated. Added in a one square meal, some spicy bier sticks and dried mango.

Salami and cheese in pitas or wraps - if I can find a practical tube if mayo or something, that's good to add a bit of moisture. This is supplemented with OSM bites, Mother Earth oat bars, and scroggin (raid the supie bulk-bins for nuts/dried fruit/choc raisins/jellybeans). I def over-cater, but the fear of going hungry/hangry outweighs any rational thought. A sit-down with a mouthful of food is a def mood-changer for me when things are going wrong.

Radix breakfast meals, back country smoothies and electrolytes. All are light, packable and with my gut health issues of late I get plenty of energy without getting sore.
Keep it simple- hand me a model 7 7mm08 and I'll be right

Usually have a snack pack with a museli bar, peanut slab, OSM bar and some nuts, lollies etc. For lunch I make some chicken wraps, ham and coleslaw croissants or made some homemade pizza pockets or scrolls. If it's winter or cold and wet i'll take a hot meal with the jetboil or the self heating ones (though they are expensive and low calorie)

Biggest help I've found for energy for the first half of the day is brekkie - Now i have a bowl of wholegrain oats with some granola, protein powder, berries etc. That keeps me going until the afternoon easy.

Dried nuts mix on its own in spring and summer, or with dried fruits for a bit more energy in winter. About my fist size in volume. Not that I necessarily eat all of it in one day. A small can of tuna with the crackers. And an apple or a pear . And sometime a veckers salami in winter.

Have breakfast. Usually muesli or porridge. Carry a couple of muesli bars and maybe a hunk of salami for lunch. Carry a couple of OSM bars and barley sugars as backup. Drink water as and when I need it. Gets me through a days hunting ok.
