If the roads are open both ways, but it seems that they may be unusable. There is a post on here about it. You can also get a permit from First Security Rotorua for Kaiangaroa Forest at a cost of $50 per person.
Really? i just looked at doc website and it says nothing about that it just says that access is off plateau car park
There's a thread about waipunga rd somewhere. .. not sure about that end.. drove main rd from murupara to te whaiti the other day. ..open fulltime now...finally. .
From my understanding the road is washed out through waipunga, I haven't had a chance to get back there and look.
You also can't get a permit to just use it as access to whirinaki - I asked and was declined, so if you do apply for a permit just say for hunting.
This was Sunday late, much lower than the Plateau, access via Waipunga is a no go only other options are listed above.

@Danny never been on pig hunt mate If you get a spare "seat" let me know!
So basically head to minginui and going in from there. how far away from plateau where you?
Yes.
Who me? As the crow flies only 5kms but below in elevation. I had to be careful not getting stuck so I just walked around in the white stuff hence the sore calf muscles today.
