Thread: WHY WE DO IT

Giday guys start a new topic to get the stories pumping in. Why do you hunt?, for me it’s always been a way of life for my family from 3 years old being carried through te urewera on my old mans shoulders. But there’s always a question I can’t answer, why do I love my way of life.

Introduced to the bush at the age of 5 (carried my own pack according to the old sepia photos!), and spent the next 15 years doing an awful lot of walking the North Island mountains and valleys as a family. Walked most all of the tracks from Whakatane to Wellington (though not in one stint). Bunny hunting from about the same time.

Started carting a bang stick into the bush from about 17 years old, then did a decent stint in the hills when possum skins were 'gold'. Been happy in the bush ever since.

Don't get into the hills enough, so have committed to getting out once a month next year.

I’m passionate about hunting and the outdoors, enjoy the mental toughness to pushing myself in the mountains and the conditions. To stalk In close on a deer in his own environment is a awesome buzz.

Well ya need something else to do when you're out tramping

grew up in tasman, our property backed onto baigents forests. Started hunting at 6 years, still get out a bit

I have absolutely no idea why I do it, I suspect it is some primitive urge, like instinct or something.
To go out and sustain myself and my clan as my ancesters had.

A primeval itch that just needs to be scratched,.... yeh thats it.

Originally it was to spend time with a good friend and doing things i havnt done before. Being raised by a solo mum camping, fishing and hunting wasnt part of my childhood.
Then it became about the hunting animals, going places and enjoying the meat.
Now its equally spending time with friends, relaxing and sharing with those who havnt done much or any hunting. Im not even disappointed anymore if i spoke a deer or dont see any.

Away from media , cell phones , man-made eyesores .
Pushing the body and relaxing the mind . Away from people who have all the wrong priorities ( in my opinion ) and meet others out bush who also enjoy being ' out there doing it - and generally they are a better breed of people .
The serenity and the rush of the hunt .
And since we had kids, most importantly time alone with the family doing something we all love together , and being closer as a family because of it .
Seeing the thrill on the faces of the kids and teaching them skills they can't learn anywhere else.
And just being a part of nature rather than a spectator watching it out the car window as you drive past .
Getting meat for the freezer is just a bonus....

Simply, hunting is natural and fullfilling. It heals and sustains the spirit of man.

Because despite living in a country absolutely buried in cattle and sheep, meat is too expensive to buy.

Because if you go the right places, there are no fucking people.
