Mate, hate to say it but often their involvement is a pre-requisite in going. Saying that, the young fella loves the outdoors and gets a real kick out of coming and it's great to watch him develop and pass on some of my limited knowledge.
Unfortunately, living in Whangarei the opportunities occur all too infrequently.
Last trip I took the wife on was a winter hunt at the Oamaru. She's a bit adverse to the cold so spent most of the time hut bound while Cam and I did our best to fall over a Sika. Spooked a few but nothing for the meat safe on that occasion.
Where abouts in Zambia are you? I spent a couple of years driving overland trucks through that part of the world in the mid 90's.
