Quite a few years back on the Island, two local dogs decided to go walk about and it was about 6 weeks later that they bit the dust. Killed a crap load of kiwis and penguins. They went quite wild and wouldn't go near people. Finally shot out on the mud flats at low tide.

At that stage two dogs, one a pit bull looking thing were barking and coming straight out of the pines towards me.
I had to get in the Ute through the passenger door just as these mutts got to me, circling the car barking and growling.
I’m picking a couple of lost pig dogs. Had my rifle but it’s a big call to shoot a dog though, would have to be a very last resort.
What did worry me thinking about it later was that you do see a few cyclist/ mountain bikers down the road. That could have been a pretty serious situation.

The last sentence is easily justification to clap those dogs with the 308

If they are aggressive like that towards people it doesn't matter. If i ever have a dog bail me up 100% plan on turning its head inside out. If I come across a dog that isn't a prick I will do what I can do to help it

Yeah, didn’t really think about that until later on. Be an awkward situation if you’d just shot two dogs and the owners come wandering out of the bush...looking for their prized pig dogs

DEAR ALL PIG HUNTERS

Do any of your dogs show aggression towards humans when out in the bush? I'm not talking about looking after the front yard when at home. Just be nice to hear from actual dog owners about when they would "accept" that their dog was acting outside the general acceptable level towards humans for a public place and being shot was justified by the shooter.
I never want to shoot a dog then encounter the owner a few minutes later. Don't think it would be a handshake and "yeah fair call mate" from the owner

Over more than a few years pig hunting have never had an incident with other pig hunters dogs even when there's been a mixed crew arrive at the pig. Seen agro between odd dogs though. Have picked up many lost dogs over the years BUT there has been an odd one which wouldn't be picked up, not aggressive but more lost and frightened. Always have tried to retrieve lost dogs in high poison areas like Pureora.

I have to agree here. If I was bailed up or threatened by a dog showing clear intent to harm me, I will shoot/kill the prick. On the other hand if it is lost and needs help or being friendly etc I will do whatever I can to help. I have zero tolerance for dangerous dogs especially now I have young children and know how vulnerable some people are. Being a pig dog is no excuse. Well cared for and trained pig dogs are human safe dogs. My brother (a big strong lad) recently got attacked not far from home when out for a run, the owners excuse was my brothers dog provoked his dog by just being present. Pretty solid logic aye.

I bumped into a group of stray dogs near Onepu hut in Te Urewera a few years back... they ended up bailing a deer right in front of me, it actually ended up being my first ever Red I'd shot haha. Real nice group of dogs, hadn't been in the bush long, probably a week or so as their GPS collars were flat and they weren't too skinny. We'd bumped into a few deer carcasses earlier that trip in the creek which was probably them. They ran away again as we were heading back to the hut to tie them up... We told the chopper pilot on the flight out and he reckoned he knew the owner. I actually recorded that hunt too: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lROOqqgruTU

Of course not, don’t be ridiculous. His original point stands and it applies to every category of dog ownership. Percentages will favour certain areas but the original point is the crux of it.

Pig dogs are generally a pretty happy smiley tail wagging bunch. I have seen one young dog that was not. The owner reckoned it would come right and fortunately it was run over before it savaged anyone.
The bloke who told me about the dogs dropping off the hut veranda and stalking him through the bush was a pretty serious hunting / fishing type who could tell the difference.

Shooting dogs is something that needs to be approached with caution.

That's why you shoot and scoot. I wouldn't be hanging around the dog that I just clapped for the reason you suggested.

Pretty random stuff there man. Although these dogs were alone and wondering they weren't what you would consider wild... Yet.
Also, do you always fully load your rifle at the start of a hunt? What's your carry status, especially when in a group?

A pig dog is a trained dog, a deer dog is a trained dog my wife's lab looks like a duck dog but is useless (untrained) so it is not a duck dog. Just because someone takes a dog in the bush doesn't mean it is trained so shouldn't be called so. Also if a dog is menacing towards you you have the right to humanely destroy it and if the owner turns up bitching well then it is a Mexican standoff.
