Wildlife Hut Access?? North Pureora off Owawenga Rd

Hoping someone maybe able to let me know what the access is to this hut.
Is there a gate across Owawenga road where it's shown to end on the topo maps and enters the DOC land
The Sat photos show what looks like a good road for the 3km into the doc land to the hut.

So, a; can we drive to the hut,
b; if not I'm going to assume the road end is OK for parking a ute for 2-3 night.

Just looking at simple few days away with a couple of mates, Hunting is the excess but we will put in a good bush hunt each during the day.
Head in Friday morning, Out Sunday / Monday. end of July/August

Last time I was there gate wasn't locked. Can't comment on condition of track. If you go through gate there are places to pull off n park if not going to hut. The track is relatively flat but lots of holes n ruts.

Havnt been in a few years but yes you could drive to the hut. Most of the road is pretty good all the way untill you turn off to the hut. That last bit you have marked in blue you need 4wd and suggest muds this time of year. There is few gates through the farm and a last one at the doc boundary but not locked.

Nice little hut, take some firewood.

From memory I trapped all that area(and cyanide) must be about 50 yrs ago now. Had some dogs with me and saw some boar sign, told the worker and his keen pig hunting brother on the station to come on the line as I was confidant the dogs would pull the pig up, nah they said we want to watch the all blacks. They hooled him down into the gorge and as I had no rifle left them to it and went home(stayed on the station in a cottage). It's a decent track in there, can drive around a fair bit. From memory a stag was shot over the back which made the nz record book for a bit.

Thanks trapperjohn, i missed that thread. I did a forum search on the hut name not on the road.
    Thanks guy's,
4wd Ute but I'm conservative with where i go as I don't have recovery gear or winch.

Youll be able to drive to the hut turn off but from there youll want muds and possibly a winch

Thanks Matto, sounds like we drive so far and then go for a walk and see how wet it's been.
Don't like deep mud, happy with sand, rut's, water crossings even clay because at least I can see what I'm working with.

how was the track to the hut? would a standard 4wd ute not lifted with no lightbar make it alright?

its pretty rough in places, if it was an old beater and you had no problem giving it shit youd probably make it but i dont take my 4x4 hilux with ATs up there put it that way . I got a 4wd with mud tires stuck going to the hut years ago and had to winch it up

Yes, you can get to the turnoff to the wild life hut without any real trouble. From there it tightens a little bit and as I said there is one hole in particular that may cause problems not far from the hut.

The next time I'm there I'll take a picture

Hi Steve, did not end up going as the least mobile of the group decided not to come so 2 of us went up Kaimas from the Waikato side instead.
