hey all, flying into winchcombe biv in the tararuas for the roar. Anyone been in there? recommend any decent faces etc. thing I may need to know and bring etc ? any info would be amazing

also, is it all long range open tops and then decent bush stalking below ? or are the open tops not so long range ? Eg. what rifle to take ? bush to 500m rifle ? Or bush out to 800 m heavier rifle ?

hahahahah nice, thanks bluebaiter. Appreciate it. Ive hunted areas like this also, leatherwood is a pain to get through, but im hoping someone has found some tracks through it made by hunters and may share some rough positions. if not, ill just throw myself in the deep end

yeah taking my garmin montana, aswell as all necessary gear for worst case of getting stuck in there for a few days. If weather looks nice a day early than due out, or two days earlier than due out will make the call to collect. all about keeping in comms with th chopper pilot. already booked with Amalgamated.

apart from the weather advice, yeah. if its windy then you might not hear the stags roaring and might pay to bush hunt. if you get bluebird days then pays to be hunting all day to maximise that window.
i havent personally hunted from winchcombe but have the surrounding areas. assuming the stags are roaring there is nothing to stop you hunting the ridges and bush spurs right over to cone and neill peak, and down the ridge to neill forks. of course if the weather breaks up in the tussock along to hector you might spot deer in the alpha basin too. the bush faces directly north and south on the map have countours spreading out around the 900 mark so that could be worth a look.
amalgamated is the way and closest. maybe pack your gear for having to walk out or re negotiating a pickup off cone or something? before the new biv was built the odd party did get flown there in previous years so it must be worth a hunt on a good day.

Oh I'm out of date,I didn't know there was a new biv,my reference to the biv sweating in post #2 was in relation to the previous NZFS dog box biv that I was familiar with.Used to sweat like a rapist.Hopefully Mk II has better ventilation.
If I was heading to that part of the Taris ,I'd head for Neil Fks- far more scope and more enjoyable productive hunting,or up at Aokap biv if that's still there.Trouble with the Neil Winchcombe ridge is you soon work the country over due to the topography - i.e only east west along the ridge,then bashing down off into the leatherleaf
