Brrr. Was thinking that it might be a good thing that our plans to head in there this weekend had fallen through. Woulda been good to put another face to the name.

That's if he could get in there. The Napier to Taupo road was closed today.

Things didn't go quite to plan. I managed to roll my ankle on the walk over Te Iringa in the snow, which slowed us down a bit. 9 hours from car to oamaru hut
H & K man got a shot off at a hind just past the old hut site, but no blood or hair etc, and the dog couldn't find it either, so we called it a miss.
The hut was busy with another 4 guys in, plus a family camping on the river flats, along with their 0ne year old. BRRRRRR!!! Skinny dipping was observed.
Due to my ankle injury, we made the call to take the easy way out via Poronui, and hitch a ride with some other hunters to collect our car. On arriving at the car park, we were questioned by a DOC ranger, along with Poronui staff , about some shooting on Poronui on Friday night. Seems some dickheads decided to try their luck in the dark.
The upshot was,, two young guys who had rolled into Oamaru hut at 4am on Sat, had a quick sleep, brekkey and left again, were quizzed at length before having two rifles seized along with two mountain bikes.
The ranger was not confident of getting it to court on the night time shooting part, as no hard evidence was found. But, the lads admitted to spot lighting around the Oamaru, and only one had a FAL.
