Woodhill Ballot

Hi guys, thought I would join up to give you the good news. Some of you will know me from the 'other' place. I am on both the WFMC Council and a committee member.

Thats enough about me.............The good news is that, following negotiations with the new Woodhill forest owners, the Ballot will be held this year.

Ballot applications are now open.................Just go to our website and follow the instructions. Here is the link............ WoodHill Fallow Deer

I will look in here from time to time to see if any of the members here have any questions or need some info regarding the blocks for those that are successful in the ballot.

Good luck for the ballot. Hope to meet a few of you if you are lucky to get drawn.

There were some rumours a while ago that the new owners had shot a lot of the herds out? Obviously no one could give a first hand account if this was actually the caseand of course there are those that will see conservation culling as "wiping out entire herds" so this could be just wild hysteria!
Any chance you could shed some light on this?

All the talks we have had with the new owners indicates that they are interested in the conservation and management of the herd. They are aware that the herd is a 'captive herd' due to the geographical location ( on a peninsular) and that it wouldn't take much to bring the numbers down below sustainability level.
Hunting by the owners etc is controlled as far as possible. The real threat to the herd is by poaching. ( as it always has been)

They have however conducted a cull for the following reason.

A few months back some 'idiot' drove in past the forestry headquarters building at about 8.30am on a sunday morning. As he drove past the gate into the forest a deer stepped out onto the road. He stopped his vehicle and shot the animal from the window of his vehicle.
At the time the forestry headquarters was being used by the local IWI and there were kids playing in the vicinity. There were also a couple of hundred people that had preceded him through the gates to take advantage of the Bike park, Horse trekking etc.

The Local Iwi, who now own the forest, decided to cull some of the deer from the area immediately adjacent to the forestry headquarters area to remove temptation, lessen the chance of this happening and to take make the animals more wary in this area.
The police were called and I believe the 'idiot' will be facing charges in the near future.

Indications are that the deer are just as plentiful in the hunting blocks.

Hopefully whomever takes this year's 'biggest buck' will be a bit more excited about it than last year's :XD:

I reckon. He shouldn't have been hunting as the rules state no camo high vis vests! "Plain blaze orange vest is compulsory for all members of party (no cammo pattern)."
