    woodhill block 5 advice

Got block 5 coming up, I hear there is a new cutover on the NW side, doesn't show on google. Plus another decent bit of cutover NE corner. Sounds like there are a few about from others who have had blocks. Anyone been in there in the last couple of months?
    Thanks

Look for the slight hills/inclines in the sand

    Any contour over 20 feet

The fallow like the small hills n valleys in that block

Thanks, do you mean in the cutover or in amongst the pines? I've heard there is a decent cutover running parallel to the beach, NW corner of the block, and that first and last light the deer tend to be crossing the cutovers heading for the dunes in the morning and back the other way evening. Taking my son as an observer/photographer, looking forward to it.

I’ve had about 4 of those blocks.
I always just walk straight to downwind end and start making my way slowly back from there.
Only time I didn’t have success was when I didn’t do that. Overthought it and tried to just hunt so called hotspots.
They’re pretty easy deer to hunt, o lime staking them in bush during day. I just go slowly and when I spook a mob I give a little hind call. They always stop.
And there’s loads of them. Saw about 40 in block 6 last year.

Mate you had to go past my place to get there. You should have said you were coming up this way. How did you get on?

Watched three bucks throughout the day but nothing that I wanted to hurt and carry home

Lot of wispy speedy looking does that fled around the place, they sure can cover ground when they want to

Great watching them going about their day

My last place backed on to the forest and the silly little buggers would come out on to a grass strip at the back of my and my neighbours property. Suffice to say I was never short of a meal in the eighteen years that I was there.

They have a very fine grained meat quite different from red deer (which I farmed on the property). Sika back steaks would be much appreciated.

The "Waikato" would spoil the flavor.

It does nothing for the meat but it serves to sharpen the culinary skills of the man running the BBQ

A good day, saw 5 including one average buck, but didn't pull the trigger. Got some reasonable photos. There is a heap of cutover that does not show on the current google earth photos. Heard there are decent bucks on block 8 this year.

Yep have been on it. As others have said go to the downwind end and hunt back up. I had a doe permit so I didn’t shoot anything for fear of getting pinged if it was a small spoiler, mate had the buck permit. There’s a wee native gut that comes off the farmland at the bottom end of the block that’s well worth a look. Deer will cross from the farmland first thing.
