Thread: Woodhill Block 6

I have been lucky enough to draw Woodhill Block 6 in a couple of weeks.

Looking at Google Maps it appears there is some freshly cut areas and some mature areas, spread along a long thin block.

Has anyone hunted this before or is aware of the area and would be willing to give me a tip or two? I've never hunted the area before.

If it was me having never been there either. I would suss out the wind when I get there, and take it from there

As Gibo said check the wind direction and check the cut over. Fallow like grass

Google earth will be helpful but old photos.
Start from downwind and work up.

For me I would watch the feeding patterns of other animals a few days before you go , If you close to any dairy cows watch what they do and when they feed . I always come down from the top of a hill onto grass areas at feeding time. Ambush the deer, is a good way of having a choice of what you have to shoot . Good hunting is to get up early ,climb high to your hunting ground and take a choice or shoot what is available early in the day. Now the works starts from there.

Which ones block6 what road you entering from?

I think I had block 7 once cant be bothered wasting an application fee on the lottery any more. Dose it boarder a farm? The edges with the farm are good. +1 Fallow like grass

I enter from Donahue Road. Its a long thin block that runs south from Donahue Road, between the ocean and Inland road down to the and of the hunting area

had block 6 last year. Get there early - its ~30 min walk from where u leave cars to top end of block. There are several big cut over clearings - all held deer but they disappeared within 45 - 60 mins of sun light (or first gun shots - which ever comes first.) Saw 15 or so deer all up, a couple of spikers and the rest were does. Deer started to move again last 30 min of light. The usual story. Take a snooze in the 6 hrs in between

Make sure you are there early, walk into the block in the dark, if there is feed out by the sand dunes I'd start there or on the edge of the forest, they will start to move back into cover after daylight, Take a set of binoculars. Hunt slowly in the trees.

We had one of the northern blocks on the weekend, saw 25 animals between us, filled our doe permit, only saw 3 bucks, one I couldn't get a clear shot at, the other two we were stalking in on late arvo when 3 4WD vehicles drove thru our block illegally (they had accessed it from the beach) & spooked them.

Also don't assumed you guys are the only ones in your block as the patrol guys said there was someone poaching one of the blocks on Sunday (Block holders heard shots near them)

Pick a high spot and do some scoping if you are hunting in a young pine forest, watch the wind as mentioned because Woodhill has deer for Africa. If its a hot day, they are likely to be under a tree cooling of from what I've seen.

They appear to be a little tame and have caught them in herds quite often too, so your chances are high if you take it easy with a bit of luck. At once I had them in arms reach, first catching their aroma then exchanged a 2 minute "Who the heck are you" look with a young fawn within meters from me.

The deer certainly tend to go to ground during the day but with so many people moving around the blocks they can get pushed out of hiding. One evening a mate and I sat on some high ground watching over a cut area and we saw 42 deer in the space of an hour, until it was too dark. The following year we saw 68 in a similar place. We just wanted a good head, so we left the spikers we saw for another day.
