Thread: working out the tripod and the distance

I've done a fair bit of playing around with these type of options. My take on it is this. Tripods need to be attached to the gun with an ARCA rail mounted just forward of the magazine, the tripod needs to have thick, solid legs without the centre extension like the one shown in the image. The BOG, or similar rifle clamp does give good stability, there is too much movement in the clamp arrangement. Tripods are large, heavy and slow to deploy. I have recently started using the Viper Flex shooting sticks, these give impressive stability and are quite fast to deploy, they can be used standing or kneeling but it is slow to change the height setting so they are best used standing @AndyAnimal put me onto these and can tell you more about these things. The trigger stick is very versatile and quick to deploy, not quite as stable as the Viper flex but still pretty good, I have used one of the knock off variants which was Ok and then went to the genuine Primos version which was a big improvement. With in seconds the trigger stick can be used from all shooing positions.
I will always used my bipod where possible but there are plenty of times where getting that low to ground does not allow for a shot, i.e. scrub in the way. this is where one of the above options shines. Both the Viper Flex and the trigger stick can also be used as walking pole, I do not find them a problem in any way to carry. Bottom line, If I had to choose only one option I would probably go for the trigger stick because of the versatility.

I sit behind mine, i don't have a center shift either, i invert my hand and apply downward pressure where I grip the head underneath the rifle mount, set it up using a bipod principle whereby the 2 legs closest to you are at 90 degrees to the rifle so when it recoils it doesn't pivot on one leg. Also your tripod looks like it has spindly legs, thicker legs are more stable
