Another favourable aspect to the bang n wait for 5 school is that occasionally you will get the second animal coming over to check on her or his dead mate. It's worked for me........

Am suprised no one has thought about the fack it tells you to sit and wait with a bullet in the spout and the safety on????? It does not take long to simply chamber a round when needed! Some one who is pumped that they just shot a deer can easily forget about the gun and the fact that it is loaded
SOMETIMES I QUESTION MY SANITY......OCCASIONALLY IT ANSWERS BACK .!
Its standard practice in Africa, basically the animal doesn't know what has happened or where it has come from so they depart hastily for the nearest cover, the idea is that you let the adrenalin wear off, the wound stiffen and possibly die before following up. Immediately chasing after it can result in the running of for miles and possibly never being recovered.
This is particularly relevant when hunting something that can kill you!

It takes 43 muscle's to frown and 17 to smile, but only 3 for proper trigger pull.
What more do we need? If we are above ground and breathing the rest is up to us!
Rule 1: Treat every firearm as loaded
Rule 2: Always point firearms in a safe direction
Rule 3: Load a firearm only when ready to fire
Rule 4: Identify your target beyond all doubt
Rule 5: Check your firing zone
Rule 6: Store firearms and ammunition safely
Rule 7: Avoid alcohol and drugs when handling firearms

I had the idea that this wait 5 minutes rule was to give the animal enough time to weaken threw blood loss to where it just wants to lay down & rest .After initial impact shock is over.
I don't have this problem with .308 they normally don't even twitch when the hit the deck .
Lesser calibers it may be a concern .But I prefer to take a humane approach to my hunting .
Gun control means using both hands
How's the fishn Timmay got a week in Taupo next week
Boom, cough,cough,cough
If I shoot a deer, goat or what ever, I usually walk straight up to it, depending on how far away it was when I shot it, and where I shot it in the body / head etc.
Most of the time I reload straight away, instinct I guess.
They don't go far with a 308...lol and the dog will find it if I can't.
Plus I never use the safety.
Same rule applies for bow hunting, so I can understand the reasoning behind a shoot and sit approach. I've been fortunate enough to have all my deer drop on the spot or walk only 15m and come to a rest.
Ive waited a couple of time's due to the fact that ive been in an area were if it did get up I would be able to not only shoot it again but see what direction it fucked of to if the second shot missed ,it shouldn't be an ego thing as ive seen animals shot and run never to return from 223's right up to 338's.so I think it is fair to the animal and yourself to check your ego at the door and put another round up the spout no matter what cal when your in a position were your futher away than a hundred yards or have some tight scrub and gullys between you just my two cents.
