Thanks to Damadama I am the proud owner of an old, very well used and sometime abused 3x M8 loopy....wanted one for ages but @zimmer wouldnt play ball and allow me to buy his LOL.... anyway I fitted scope on Howa .270 but did thing a bit differently.the Xhairs actually do form a X ...now this doest work with post n rail...why the 4x never got done like this, and you ballistic christmastree reticle wont work either ,but for a NON twiddle n fiddle scope with duplex that is used in bush it is ideal Neil...... it is a right mongrel to sight in..unless you take boresighter along and slip it in to make changes....or think about how it will move....
anyway..I fitted scope having place bore sighter in and took careful note before removing other scope..so zero was pretty much going to be same.
left home yesterday arvo to head up to local spot, got there and ute flew up shingle road past me.....I stopped and had yak with young local sighting in in his deer paddock beside road, then carried on to parking spot, another ute came along...circus came to mind. I STOPPED drank me cuppa tea and waite dtill all the yahoos had gone home, all 5 ute loads......
crawled into scratcher in back of wagon and slept like a babe, other than spotlighters going up and back about midnight, and numerous out for widdle breaks, both for me and Meg my big black bitch.
alarm went of at daybreak, turned it off and went back to sleep.
got up little bit later and headed off into wet bush after taking note of wind direction to determine which way I would hunt block.30 years of puddlin around in area has given me fair idea of what wont work..
bugger all deer sign down low,not surprising with all the traffic but get back away from road and into the thick shit...and believe me there is LOTS of thick shit and deer sign starts to show up...after reading deer 243s account from last week I gave a few roars....and heard ZERO replies...have never got reply in this block ....did hear 4-5 roars during day but were distant and not constant, and wouldnt reply when I roared...and no Im not bad at it!!!!
nothing doing at lookout, carried on through wet bush getting over windfalls from last year was interesting,my old tracks just arent there anymore.Meg was happy to stay in close,no real interest which pretty much tells me bugger all around close,Ive got pretty good at reading her and she lets me know when keen to head somewhere,it just didnt happen today,we got up into jelly fern clearings, brease was very gentle and in correct direction for a change, nothing on clearings today, not even last weeks fawn, climbed to top of clearing, sat and had brunch, drink and pebbles candy...then moved off,had gone maybe 15 yards uphill where deer tracks were heading,Meg still not interested,I stopped, turned around and headed back downhill through clearing, still not 100% sure why posibly the crappy knoll from hell being just above was still in my mind..anyway we carried on for about 75yards,Meg a little keen now ,we have spooked a heck of a lot of deer here over the years,I say spooked as its not often I have managed to get drop on them..actually typing that I realise that since Ive had Meg my batting average has increased no end here, starting with a double with @Sidelock 5 years ago....Meg being keen puts me on high alert and sure enough I looked ahead to see young hind looking at me...well I came up to look for a stag...but deer is here, its not huge and will be tasty...so up comes howa...X goes on chest and the 170 gn speer absolutely sacked hind...she literally dropped on spot quivering.Meg was good girl and stopped beside me,then led me down to hind, she then jumped on it to chew its bum and pluck some hair LOL....
out with knife and this time I remembered to take meat off all outside BEFORE gutting her to remove eye fillets and heart.....found last time out with bullet rupturing gut bag the smell went onto hind quarters as blodd came out bumhole...MUCH cleaner to do it this way....even old fart like me can learn new tricks.
put Megs pack on her,she just sat there watching me bone out all four quarters, she did get as many off cuts as wanted to eat. then loaded up pikau, tied it back on old pack frame,Meg got maybe 60-70% of front quarters in her saddle bags...possibly 5kgs in total...and we set off homeward...Meg led most of way, then bright pink saddlebags sure stick out amoung the ferns.
2hrs carry saw us back at wagon and off homeward.
so Xmarks the spot...local knowledge built up over lots of years, and Xmarks spot through loopy I want projectile to go.
stay safe out there folks, the next two weeks will be busy in the boonies.
