Thread: Your best Rifle EVER?

Would have to be my CZ 17 HMR, has had 1500 rounds through it at least and still shoots one ragged hole. the rabbit and magpie population took a dive when this little beast was added to the safe.

Sako AII 7mm/08 bought new in Jan 1988 (7mm/08 factory ammo was largely unavailable in NZ then). Scope was Zeiss C Diatal 4x32 clamped in med Leupold Sako ring mounts.

Replaced the walnut stock with a Browns Precision Kevlar 1lb'er stock which was a sod to finish. Two coats of Epiglass reaction laquer. Stock weighed 12oz when finished and bedded. Rifle with scope and sling weighed 6.25lb loaded. Sold it in a weak moment about ten years ago. One of my many bad decisions. Such is life.

Mine is also a .243, a kimber Montana. Sadly stolen in a burglary 2 years ago which still guts me as I had a lot of good memories attached to it. Took everything bar whitetail and wap with it. Here is the only pic I have of it on my phone :

I had a Remington 700 in 7mm08 which I loved but have moved on to a browning a bolt stainless in 270 and have mounted a bushnell 4200 elite 3-9x40 on top with some nice leupold rings. Looking to register first deer with it this weekend but is a pleasure to shoot(despite a wee bit more noise than I am use to). Action feels great, magazine design and feels really nice in my hands.
In regards to my dad he has a 30+ year old Sako ,not sure if hunter or forrester in 308 with a great old school leupold on it. Still has original pink butt and all blueing. Accounted for quite a few deer in the ureweras but still looks mint. Suppose if you buy quality and take care of it you do not need to replace your gear.

My nasty 303, its heavy, rusty and with iron sights it is useless after 120m but it will smack over anything in its way and I've had more kills with it than my flash new rifle.

Its going to be 100 years old next year. I wonder if a letter will come from the Queen addressed to Mr. L. Enfield lol

And did I mention thar theres a nifty place in the but to store a spare shoelace!

Ugly hut is no longer I think.
Went in there in late eighties. And once while on ex with the battalion. Almost got sucked under a rock crossing the river with all my gear on.
Seen bugger all deer but the trout fishing was amazing. Wasp city as well.

Think for me it would be my 1st centrefire
its a weatherby redmist heavy barrel .223

Would have put over 1000 shots through it, it has hundreds of rabbits and possums under its belt and will punch out .5c 5 shot groups all day.

I have managed 1st round hits on rabbits out to 500y mostly with a clearage xp5 but it now spouts a swarvo habat

It's a tie.
I have 2 favourites, I sold both and I regret doing it. Both were in .270win. The first was a BSA Monarch with a heavy old German scope. I thought when I bought it that I'd need to replace the scope but it shot really well and never went out. Then I got a Winchester featherweight model 70, a rifle I had always wanted, and it lived up to my expectations. I sold it to finance a pair of pistols.

Nice thread - after a series of rifles including a nice Tikka 308 and a nice german 6.5x55 I then for the next 25 years hunted with a BSA "Hunter" in 7x57, animal numbers were low in those days so I carried it a lot and shot various animals with it, never large numbers.

Then 6 or 7 years ago some form of madness came over me and I've been hooked on Mauser Kurz rifles ever since. I've shot more Reds, Tahr, Chamois and wallabies with the first 250-3000 Kurz I rebuilt than I ever got with the BSA. The Kurz is light (6 and a quarter pounds scoped with a 2-7 Kahles S2 and ringing wet), handy with its 22" barrel, beautifully balanced and the 250 is for all intents and purposes a 243 one day and a 260 the next - sits right between them. Carries all day right in your hand.

Luckily I didn't sell the BSA, and one day a mate who was having a bit of a tough time got a package of it in the mail, his Dad had one and he always wanted the same thing and I was able to make it happen!
