Hey guys, I'm looking at putting a 1-8 or something simialar with a low powered bottom end on my bush gun. Any recommendations or models I should steer clear of? Could be keen to do a deal for my z5 3.5-18x44 if someone has something.
Cheers

I run a vx3i 1.5-5 on my bush gun and its great. Super light and quick on target. If I was doing it again I probably go with the 2-7 for little bit more on those longer shots.
I suggest you consider a 2.5-8 VX3 for the bush gun. My long range gun wears that Z5
Getting a Vixen 1.5x6x44 in the mail next week, large FOV 34ft @50yds.99% of my deer under 250yds.Lookng forward to a quick deer finder.Theres not many low powered scopes in NZ with good FOV.
Local but old stock in a ware house.None left.Reloaders you could try.
I put a Leupold VX-3i 1.5-5x20mm on my dedicated bush gun. No complaints.
For a long time I used a 4x32 Kahles with very heavy outer reticle cross. Because the magnification is always the same my brain got trained to the image which made it very fast to get on target. What ever you get I would be looking for a scope at least as good as the Z5 in poor light but with a heavier reticle.
In 1-8 you end up quite a heavy optic. Like I don't know any lighter than you Z5. Some alright options in the 1-6 range etc. I have an Atibal XP8 1-8 that's nice but just purchased a VX6 1-6 so it's being replaced. It's a nice scope but the Leupolds got a bit more classic lines to suit the lever action.
I love my 2-7VXR firedot
downside is a 30mm tube and the extra turret on what would be the smooth side of the scope for the button/battery
i have the 2.5-8 vx3 and recently parted ways with a varix 11 2-7 and neither holds a candle to how nice the vxr is
even at two power you see a lot of suppressor in the scope, so before you sacrifice top end magnigication for it just check that you like how it looks when you bring the gun to your eye,
I like smaller scopes but I always seem to run them on 4 power
Have a look at the Swarovski z8 epic glass 42 metre field of view at 100 metres very nice to use and very light 18 oz for a 30mm tube.
Watch for one second hand come up now and again for good prices
I have a VX5 1-5 firedot - it works well
I use a 1.5 to 6x (Nighteater) and find it great. My Brother uses a Vortex spitfire fixed 3x and I have been really impressed with that.

I had a Vortex Strike Eagle 1-8 on my GSR, they are great scopes for the money.
I have used a Trijicon 1-8 as my main hunting scope for a couple of years now-I like it a lot. its heavier than the z6 1-6 I had before but the extra power helps, as does being able to dial.
How many have a true 1x. Is it more important than a good fitting rifle and scope? I've shot animals on the run with an old 6x40 by winking at them, both eyes open swing onto it shut the left... And I'm no Annie Oakley
dont know what your budget is but ive being playing round with a vx freedom 1.5-5 at work, for the money they are a really nice optic
I'm too tight to buy new anyhow,
they haven't got the most elegant proportions looks wise but with a bit of use I'm sold on them for utility

Got a Shepherd 1-8x24. Mil locking turrets and illuminated. Was good on my ar that went to gun heaven.
the 2x7 loopies are great bush scopes...Ive used 3x9x40mm loopy for main rifle /bush scope for last 15 years, its not on rifle only cause the wee m8 4x is better than any other Ive used for bush work.
field of view is important but gun fit/how well your scope fits YOU is more important than anything else.
the wee 1-5 loopies are awesome too...
I dont dial so dont see need for top end loopies...the tail end ones do job just fine for me.
I've just got a Sightron S-TAC 2-10x32 which is a good fit for my Sako A1. They're quite reasonably priced over here and lightweight.

In one inch tubes, The little 3-9x36 z3 swaro is worth a look. A bottom end of 3x is ok in the tight stuff. The 2.5-8 and 2-7x leupold’s also. Not quite as bright though to me.
In 30 mm the 1.6-6x42 zeiss, kahles and swaro are very bright but are a bit heavier. Also sfp.
Running a Burrit XTRII 1-8 on my 10/22. great little scope only thing i dont like is single rotation turret, 9.5 mils useable only...
I have a leupold VX2 2-7. What was the VX3 eventually. Cracking little scope. Sits in my cupboard as a spare. If you really like that we could talk................
