    1:8 twist 223 bullet selection

    Hey Team
I am about to receive a Vortex scope for my new ruger all weather 223 22" barrel and was thinking about what ammo i should be using.

I am using the rifle for a bit of varminting (if that's the correct term for shooting hares etc) out to say 250yd and the occasional goat hunt.

In my old 223 i used Hornady training 55gr SP. I have no idea what twist it was but they seemed very conssistent.

What do you think should i be using? I don't & won't be reloading at this stage. Also, i will get it threaded and considering shortening the barrel to 18", what do you think? They also come factory "compact" models with 18" barrels on them.

I have ordered a Vortex Dimondback 4-12x40 with BDC reticle if that makes any difference.
If i could have a full time job shooting pests i'm up for over time.

I have found 77gn smk over 23.3gn 2206h in a adi case with federal primers to give amazing results in a 22" 1:8 barrel

Some of the boys tried the new H&F 55gr ammo on our New Years Day shoot. Good brass cases, and they are loaded with Hornady SP 55gr pills. Snipering bunnies out over 300y consistantly. All using it were happy. Value for money it is very good. Pack of 50 for $49.99.

I've used a fair bit of the Highland/Prvi Partizan ammo with good results. H&F deals for 3 x 20rnd packs is pretty good to. ($59.99)

I take it your not reloading. That opens up lots more choices

awesome, that's what i want to hear. I'll check those out.

as for reloading, i've fired about 60 223 rounds in the last 12 months so not worth it for me. i use my 22 & hmr more often.

American Eagle 50g works magic out of my 1:8 twist 20in barrel AR15.
Just ask the magpies and hares that thought they were being smart staying outside of .22lr range

Katipo would certainly be worth a go, cheap enough too.

so went and lay in the beating sun this morning and put some rounds through the new rifle.
In the past i have shot hornady training 55gr brass ammo and still had 20 rounds left. I bought a box of the H&F 55gr ammo with the hornady projectile. I tried to sight in the rifle with it and it's all over the place with my rifle. I suspect that the 1:8 twist isn't the right setup for them. after 6 rounds and no consistency i put 3 hornady training through and the were very close then another 3 H&F and again random patterning. the wind had come up so i put another 5 hornady training through at 100yds to get the right elevation and did so quite well with a group of about 2" but i have no doubt it'll improve in better conditions and a better setup range. I finished off with another 5 H&F and the grouping was about 12" or more.

i took my hmr as well and put 9 in fairly quick succession at the other target i had on the board. damn they are good, 8 were on the exact same level height wise but left a "join the dots" type line from the bullseye to about 3" to the right and the wind was left to right. I cocked up one of the shots which was low & right but the hmr is very easy to shoot.
    Damnitchy and sparky1000 like this.
