um not cheap but what is these days. Just dont try and get a Lee Enfield no1 mk3 or no4 to stay supersonic at 1000yds, way too much powder needed for these old actions.

600yds, yes...but they are 2MOA guns as std and many will now shoot even worse.

It really depends on how far you want to shoot, how hard you want to hit the steel, how hard you want to work in the wind, how big you target is & how big your budget is.

In good conditions you can get a 223 to 1000, with the heavier projectiles, but good luck seeing the strikes or more importantly the misses or hearing it hit.

The 6mm isn't much better in regards to hitting power but will certainly do the job.

The 6.5 with 140s would be pretty hard to beat in the small cases.

The 7mm has a bit going for it, you can add horse power but then recoil & barrel life gets out there compared to the 6.5.

Everyone knows the 30 cal is shit so don't bother going there, especially the 308...

338s are too big & make hitting the target too easy, combined with noise & recoil they are out

375s make it way too easy, loud & expensive so they are out too

50s are too loud, expensive & inaccurate, so they are toast....

Which really makes the good old 6.5 x 55 & 260 look really pretty good overall
