Thread: The 16" 270

I have been talking for a while now about doing a short 270, more for my own interest than anything else. I picked up a Sauer 100 classic that was on special a week or two back and took it straight to gunworks to get the chop and a suppressor fitted, you should have seen the looks I got when I told them what I wanted done! I wanted to keep overall length shorter than the rifle would be without any suppressor or chop so Robbie said he would build a suppressor for it based on their 41mm diameter 9 inch long model, but add an inch to give an overall length of 10 inches, 5 inches back, and 5 inches forward of the muzzle once it was cut to 16" he also decided to use a stainless blast baffle inside the suppressor to cope with any abuse.
The rifle was originally a 22" barrel so overall length now with the suppressor is still an inch shorter than that.
I got the rifle home yesterday and wasted no time getting some load development rounds ready to go, I based a lot of what I was doing from advice on American forums from guys shooting the 15 inch Thomson Contender pistols in 270win, I went with reloader 17 powder and 110 grain Sierra Pro Hunters, these projectiles are excellent killers in every other caliber I have used them in (7mm08 and 260rem) so I thought I can't go too far wrong if I can get them moving quick enough.
I found it a bit tricky shooting for accuracy at 100 yds with a 6x scope but found a happy spot at 58grains of reloader 17 and have just put it through the chrono and came up with 3060fps, I punched this information into strelok and confirmed I was getting the correct drop at 400 yards so can be confident the velocity is correct.
Happy with how it's turned out and should be a handy little rifle

A mate uses the 110gr Pro Hunters in his 270 & swears by them. He's shot a shit load of deer with them so no BS.

After shelling out for a custom suppressor I don't imagine Ryan would be shooting this without a suppressor !

However, to your point and as noted by @Gibo - in the absence of a suppressor he could fire a shot and then run up and club the intended target to death with that fine piece of wood !

awesome rifle and sounds like you have got the load to do the bizo.......now to see what you can do with a 150 for bush work????or swap the cup n core for a barnes of same weight and leave all else the same?????

I put a few of my 150gr Gameking loads (loaded for sako 75) through it and it shot them really accurate, didn't chrono though, I think the 110 will be a good allrounder and do Bush to 400yds no worries with good shot placement, it still has 1000ftlb at 450

I reckon 110gr in .270, turns them into a great laser, I've gone that route after getting 2x.270's on a trade, one of which just fits like a custom, and groups incredibly well .(no suppressor). I was going to 6.5-it, but cant destroy something that works so well. With a fixed 6x scope, and my self-imposed limit of 250-ish metres, I find under 3k works for me...and f/all recoil, (think .243-)..for me, 110gr ph's, has been like re-inventing the .270

But that my friend is a nice rifle I like the wood that’s stunning
And 3060fps is Surpriseing thought you would be less than that with such a short barrel
I thought you would probably be getting more 270/08 velocitys as quite a bit of that 58gn powder change would be burned in the air after it left the barrel surely
Seems a nice handy kit

Surprisingly I thought that the suppressor would be black as anything after just a few rounds but looking in it with a torch it's not, R17 seems a strange powder being on the slow burning end of the spectrum but it works well in short barrels in a lot of calibers, guess I will have to give it the old night time test with no suppressor to really see what's getting burnt outside the barrel
